Hardwood Custom Sawing

I strive to get the highest quality lumber out of every log I saw. I inspect every log I saw for knots, catfaces, cracks, and heart check to determine which face to open on to get the clearest board possible. After I open a log and take off a flitch or two I rotate 180 degrees instead of the much more common 90-degree rotation. I switched to 180-degree rotation several years ago and immediately found the advantages. Wider boards and centered growth rings. Centered growth rings mean less crook and warp as the lumber dries. I recently discovered another big advantage to 180 sawing. Makes grain and color matching a lot easier and more pleasing to the eye when you have a glue up for something like a desk or table top. Recently started marking the boards as they come off the log to make it even easier to match the color and grain. Hope to get a few pictures up soon to illustrate the technique. I also saw parallel to the bark to get clear boards. This technique is known as taper sawing. Most of the time it is used on logs with a lot of butt swell.

There are a few things the customer can do to insure they get the highest quality lumber possible out of their logs. The first thing to do is throw away the tape measure when bucking logs. Odd length lumber only presents a problem when stacking for the kiln and it is an easy problem to deal with. Let the tree tell you where to buck it. Put knots at the end of the log. Try to buck the log into straight sections. Excessive sweep in a log kills the yield. Another item to consider is how to dry the lumber. If you plan on air drying you should have a spot prepared before I ever get the logs. I kiln dry lumber and there are four other guys in the area that dry. Arrangements should be made before the tree is cut especially if it is a light colored hardwood such as ash, hackberry, or maple.

For the most part I am not mobile so logs must be brought to our farm. If you have a large quantity of logs to saw close to me I would consider going mobile or I know a couple of excellent sawyers that are mobile and I could refer you to them. I will come to your premise and haul logs to the farm for sawing. The cost for this service is based on mileage and or time. In some cases this is an excellent option for people in suburban areas as I deal with the sawdust and slabs.

Logs brought in for me to saw must be clean and free of gravel and mud. Limbs must sawn off close to the log. I can pressure wash at $25/hour if your logs are muddy.

The maximum size of log I can cut is 30" diameter by 12' long. If you have a bigger log to saw I might be able to do it but we need to talk about it first. Minimum size is 8" diameter by 3' long.

Small Scale Logging

Can't get a logger to even take a look at your trees because you only have a few? Don't blame the logger. Most of them are working on a slim profit margin and it would cost them money to pull in a logging truck and skidder for just a few trees. I log with a pickup, trailer, and small farm tractor so I would be more than happy to take a look at your trees.

I completed the MFPA Missouri Professional Timber Harvester course in 1999. Certificate number 203. I practice directional felling to avoid damage to the trees that are to remain. Also practice Best Management Practices (BMP's).

I do not cut trees near structures, power lines, and etc. I would recommend a tree service company with the proper equipment and training for this type of work.
