I am getting very close to starting my 170 after a engine replacement. Its a 86 model 170. I've never ran one before and need some information. The previous owner removed the neutral safety switch and I'm uneasy starting a Detroit for the first time not knowing if I'm in neutral, forward or reverse. I don't have any kind of manual or anyway of knowing which lever is F-N-R and which is 1-4. It's a power shift transmission with 2 levers on the right side of the seat parallel to the machine.
Southside logger shared the shift patters on his but it's a newer machine and is different than mine. I also plan on installing a neutral safety switch when I find out where to put it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you access the underside of the shift levers?  If it's like mine it will be a series of neutral safety switches, that are activated by a plate with a series of milled out detents.  The NSS units feed power back to the solenoids on the transmission, it's a pain but with multi meter you can figure out what has power when, which should at least tell you where N is.  I did just send Charlie a text, I will text you if he gets back to me with anything useful.

The fnr lever will have 3 detents and the gear selector lever 4.  Your transmission is a powershift , just does not have an electronic shifter.  I think I have some diagrams , I will try to dig them up.

A diagram would be great. I actually came to the same conclusion on the shift pattern this afternoon. I also discovered something else that concerned me. There is a 3/4 pipe nipple sticking up from the transmission open ended. I assume it is a vent but it should have some sort of a breather on I would think. Any sort of a wiring diagram would greatly appreciated as well.

Was it the dipstick housing at one time?

Hope this helps, I have much more info on this transmission.  P4-375 .

I could not find any info on the location of the neutral safety switch. There does not appear to be a port for it on the selector valve.  So it may have been located some where in the shifter cable assembly.
