I'd leave more especially in frozen wood...when using shallow notch (to leave more room for wedging on back) just make sure notch has wide angle...and clean to the apex (not overcut either way)...like you have it...I wouldn't use this method for anything leaning back too much...plunge cuts are good for heavy leaners in direction of fall.
