I have some shorter ash logs that i am thinking about using for 4" square table legs in the future.  Should i slab the logs a little over 4" and then air dry slabs and cut legs out of slabs after drying or do you normally cut the legs first then air dry?

You will end up with more legs if you go with drying slabs before cutting blanks, don't end up with back pain from handling oversized slabs for a couple extra table legs.
You may think that you can or may think you can't; either way, you are right.

Legs sawn with the pith in them almost always crack and split.

I rift cut table legs too--- that will give a leg two grain faces.
