Hi everyone.
I just bought a new MS 362 and am wondering
what your opinions of the airfilter on the 362 is.
I read some people were having trouble with dust getting through.
I read there were updated parts that sorted this out.
If so how would I know they are on my saw.

Does anyone know what needs to be done or is there a modification
required to ensure dust dones not get in.

I would appreciate your thoughts on this.

Thanks & Regards to all.

I've never heard of the issue, Ive had mine for several years now,  no problems what so ever,, love the saw,
only have a few chain saws I'm not suppose to use, but will at times, one dog Dolly, pretty good dog, just not sure what for yet,  working on getting the gardening back in order, and kinda thinking on maybe a small bbq bizz,  thinking about it,

Hi drobertson, thank you for posting.
Im happy to hear you have no issues with the filtration.
I got my saw in a round about way, was looking for another
saw when this one came up at a sale, NEW.

Then I begain to read up, and found some people were not happy
with the filtration, they said fine dust was getting in to the carb,
no one was clear on where the dust was getting in, whether it was
through the filter element, between the filter element, or at another
joint on the carb body.
Some said to use grease or valeline between the filter where it seats,
but apparantly it sits / contacts the saw at two points, One is where you
would expect directly at the base of the filter, and another contact point
is supposed to be inside the filter where it hits the cab for a second time.

Then others state it gets in at the pre filter, I cant see a prefilter on my saw.

And thats why I posted, to try and get to the bottom of what people were
talking avout.

I think there are 2 different types of air filters for the ms 362 depending on when it was purchased. The ms 362 that I have is the c-m model, takes a round pleated air filter not the old felt cartridge type. If I remember people talking about the issue it was from the old style.

My saw is only new, is this the good type airfilter.

The earlier style ms362's are the ones that had the trouble. Here's the style of filter with the problems to compare to Greenerpastures picture

Thanks Woodcutter, good to see the differences.
Lots of comments regarding people having
problems with fines in the throat of the carb, I can
see clearly now that the Pre Filter parts I kept seeing
on fleabay were for the older model, and no good to me.

Would be nice if the throat and filter off the newer saws
would fit on to the older ones, and filter better, may be
someone has this informaiton and will post it.

Thanks to all who commented.

Is there a retrofit option to eliminate the dual filter set up on the older 362's with the newer filter?  Mine is the old style, and it's a PITA to deal with.

Just curious.

I've done some reading up on converting the earlier style ms362's to the new type filter and to my understanding it can be done. There are alot of parts that have to be replaced but it can be done. There are couple threads around that were discussing it. I'll do some looking.

Heres some discussion of the filters. Sounds like a -Stihl dealer should be able to get the parts and possibly know what all needs swapped. I never have got around to trying the swap on my 362 yet so I don't have any first hand experience.

Just an update, my 362 has the latest filter fitted, and by all accounts
this filter does a good enough job, so am in the clear.
I was realy confused at the beginning when I looked up filters for the
saw and found the older type, and then read of people having problems
with some of them.
I read somewhere that you can change the filter, but its not cheap, wish
I had kept that link.

I have no older style 362, but its worth looking for the place
the dust is getting into the carb box.
I say this because I have a Shindaiwa 490, that upset me to no
end when after only ten minutes work I found dust in the throat
of the carb.
I also found it difficult to get a better flocked filter, eventually
found they can be got in the US.
But I looked at the problem, and found the dust was coming back
and up a 7/8" hole in the carb box floor near the back handle,
I blocked that hole with a square of pot scrubber material laying
flat on the carb box floor above the hole, nylon material that the air
gets through, but no more dust, and the saw runs a cool as can be.

Next I put a ring of vaseline around the stump the filter sits over
on the carb, cut a whole day, and any dust that still got in was all
collected on the vaseline, there was no dust in the filter its self,
though the saw had to be cleaned around the drive sprocket every tank
as the wood was two years old and coverd in dust and rotten bark,
even in this environment its the cleanest filter I have been running,
and it started out a disaster that only lasted ten minutes beore dust
was in the carb.

I have an Echo 501, new, and just started using her, she gets dust in
the carb box too, and a surprising amoun at that.
She keeps her filter clean though, but I did note where the dust
is getting in, one of the places that was like a funnel is the 3/8 hole
where you adjust the idle, I could clearly see where the dust came
up the side got sucked in that hole and covered the surrounding area,
so am looking for a rubber grommet to put in there, there will be other
places too, but if I block them off as I find them, my filter will remain
clean for longer.

Just saying, sometimes there is a simple solution.

Regards to all
