I have lead on an older (95-2000) bed extension. The guy is going to get me more info on it, but in the meantime. Does anyone know how universal they are? Will an extension that is that old fit on a new mill? If it will work for me, I can see this opening a market for me that could be quite profitable. Thanks in advance! Kevin

I do believe it would fit. I saw a video on YouTube the other day that had a newer mill and the frame from an older mill attached to it like a bed extension. I would think that if you could use an old mill frame for an extension on a new mill you could also use a old bed extension on a new mill. Check with Wood-Mizer to make sure.

Thanks, I'll definitely follow up with wm.

Yes, check with WM. I see you list having a Wide mill. I don't know if the frame/bed is the same size on them or if just the head unit is different.

The older mills and extensions did not have the ends of the upper and lower rails drilled to take a locator pin, depended on the frames to keep the ends of the rails aligned. Your mill will have the rails drilled, but the older extension probably won't. Easy to fab a jig to drill the rails to take a 3/8 pin. Pics in my gallery in the sawmill folder...

Thanks guys, I'm going to call wm now. I've looked at your jig before and can make something up similar pretty easy.

After talking to wm, anything 1996 and up will fit. So, depending on what the guy actually has and if the money is right, I might be setting up to cut some longer stuff on occasion.

Keep in mind the ability to move (on site and off) larger boards.  I have 4 rails for my LT-10 and used the extra 2 rails once.

It was an epic beam 20+ that I cut, later into 10' but I checked it off the list.

Just an opinion but go for it as you can never have to many toys if you have space.

It may fit, but is it drilled for the dowel pins? If it doesn't, the attachment method is not as secure. I wouldn't want to attach without the 1/2" dowels.

I'm pretty sure I'll have to make one of pineywoods jigs to bore the alignment pins.

I am probably wrong, but I thought after 96 they were a direct fit, before that they had to be ordered for the specific mill at the time it was built.

The rep I spoke with today said that from 96 on there are several different mounting kits and that the drilled and pinned rails was fairly new, he seemed to think that started about 5-7 years ago. He said, even prior to 96 would work, but I would have to do some fabrication. So, in a nutshell, I think your right.

My 2008 mill is drilled for the dowel pins. The mill where we had my BX24 and a BX12 together was not. I think that was a 2002. My 2010 BX24 was only drilled on one end, we had to drill for the BX12 to go on. The BX12, newer than 2010, was drilled on both ends, as I'm told all new BX's are.

There are different coupling systems depending on year, as well as different channel iron braces. WM will be able to get you the right parts if you get them the right revision numbers for the mill and BX.

As far as I know, the size of rails and channel hasn't changed, ever.
Compared to the old insert and set screws method, the alignment pins are far and away the better setup.

Andries, are you saying that an extension can be fitted to the old frame, I think mine is an 88 model.

There's a bunch of us on the Forum that have done just that.
Old mills to newer extensions.
Old extensions to newer mills.
We built two extensions for my LT30 - circa 1992.
I don't think that WM has changed the dimensions of the rail beam or rails.
Best bet, an email or call to WM would answer that question pretty quick.
