I had the thumb welded up last week and added the hydraulics. My welds are not pretty but hopefully they will hold. It worked well kept a 20-24 foot piece of ash up off the ground and secure while I cut it into rounds.

I've got a mini excavator with a hydraulic thumb. I can't imagine life without one. Great machine to have.

gasman,
That looks pretty handy for bucking up firewood. The next time it's hooked to the tractor could you take and post a picture?

Sorry it took so long but here is a 24' Ash pretty straight 14" - 12" I'd like to know the approximate weight if anyone can figure that ? The 3 PT thumb works fine but the forks are too long and when I slide them under the logs. Or I need to group the limbs away from the larger logs I am cutting up. Other than that it works fine.

Looks like a good working height to saw firewood.

gasman,
Thanks for the picture. At the present time I'm using the thumb on my old 550 backhoe.
If I get rid of of it,the 3 pt thumb looks like a good option. My back really likes having the log elevated and so does my chainsaw.

The height is the best part of it ( says my back and my saw ) much faster then on the ground and then rolling it away....and it being secured to the pallet forks. If I had a bigger tractor I would have the thumb on the bucket. This will do for a few years until I can get the money for a bigger tractor.

if that is white ash it would weigh about 1061 pounds according to the ff log weight calculator.  jg
