Found inside a Maple tree

It was quite windy here in Massachusetts two days ago and we lost the top half a 60-70' maple tree (thankfully just lost one fence segment).   While cutting up the large branches I came across this just laying on the ground.   The image measures about 9" long.   Any thoughts on this?  Anyone ever see anything like it before?

   Looks like a prison tat. :D :D

   It is neat though. Always interesting when you open a log. Like Forrest Gump says - like opening a box of chocolates. You never know what you are going to find even in what looks like a routine log.

Very neat, it does look like a leaf or feather. My guess is that it is an ambrosia mark and the feathering is from it being split rather than sawn.
