I have three tax lots that total 166 acres of hilly/wooded that i need to put a fence around and cross fencing
I work alone and am trying to find a good robotic total station kit
what will i need for under $3,000

i know i will need an accuracy of 3 degree or less

I have two survey tripods, nothing else.

I am looking for what would be the minimum required parts to do solo surveying without a lot of walking back and forth.

to compare this to milling; i am trying to buy the sawmill, but forgetting the log stops, turner, and blade.

for the survey equipment do i need a data collector? or is the data collector the remote controller for the total station.

saw this on ebay

or do i need something more like this

Well,.. how much line will a Registered LS run for 3K??
all you need is inter-visible points, then you can fill in the pieces,

Total Stations are Line-of-site  instruments
and you have to walk,  data collection (raw) is nice but not useful in the field
unless you can compute with it.  otherwise your writing the angles and distances
and hand computing your way.

GPS to stay on-line?  I'm thinking a stationary base and a rover unit and as little tree cover as possible
With either system you should start with confirmed hard points otherwise your guessing at best which may cause all kinds of troubles later

Q1 = my property has eight PLSS_Corner markers

Q2 = are you referring to a THEODITE?
Q3 = yep that is what i am thinking of. a stationary total station and me walking with the rover unit marking the fence line.

FACT 1 = 100% AGREE. measure twice or even three times, then fence once.

what do you think of this one?

just a little over budget, but i like the data collector screen

did some more research on the difference between 3" and 5"
3" at 1,500 feet the difference is 0.02ft = 0.24 inches?  1/4 inch?
5" at 1,500 feet the difference is 0.04ft = 0.48 inches?  1/2 inch?

so for a fence line i think i can use the 5" = cheaper

I got the Topcon GTS 825A Robotic Total Station w Nomad Data Collector

it had the most stuff for the least $$

DDW_OR,   Question, have you spoken to the adjoiners about your plans?  those lines are theirs too.

FWIW I would still see what a local LS could provide you for service.

As a landowner I would NOT be comfortable with my neighbor running the property lines and installing fence no matter what equipment he has. He could run all the lines he wants but when it comes down to it the only ones that matter are the ones a registered and licensed surveyor puts in.

I had 8 corners pinned and registered with the county clerk and a 2.5 miles of lines flagged over the last few years and have way less than 3k invested.
