LT40HD SS side support covers. Why not loader arm tubing ?
« on: July 24, 2017, 10:00:07 pm »
Just curious why the LT40HD does not come with stainless side support covers. They do come on the Super, and my side supports are drilled for them.
Just ordered them since I am repainting the mill and replacing all Decals and stickers. The stainless covers should help protect the side supports. I am considering making half covers for the tubing that connects the loader arms, just wondering if anyone has done this. It gets beat up pretty good and a thin wall stainless half pipe would work well there I think. May have to use sheet stainless bolt along one edge and hammer it around the pipe then bolt other edge.

I always thought that it was neat being painted orange.  That way it is easy to show the customer the shiny spot when he nicks it with his chainsaw!!  :o  Yes, it has happened.   :D

Yes it has.  And always from customers who say "don't worry, I know what I'm doing". ::)

I believe the main purpose of the stainless guards is to prevent the steel from staining certain species of wood and also to reduce the friction between the wood and the mill parts.

The covers are for anti-stain protection . Walnut is one that will stain bad .  That being said price point on the mill. You can have WM add any available option you want at the time of purchase . The additional covers you speak of would fall under "Useful saw mill mods "

Thanks, Not much into chrome,,, hate rust,, love polished stainless though. I have the support arm covers coming,,,, also found some thin wall stainless tubing with a 4.25" ID and should work great around the 4" OD steel tube. The piece I found is also exactly 57.75 long,,,, the same length as the steel tube. Like it was meant to be. Now to cut it in half and mount with button head SS screws.

Yes,,, I know,, way too much time on my hands. But what the hell,,,, could be sitting in a little dive bar in Dahlonega.

Thanks, looks like you also have an Onan on your mill, is it a P224 ? Mine was changed after they had two Kohlers lock up for some reason according to WM history. The first was covered under warranty 2nd one not. Mill only has 635 hours. I will post some pics when finished, I thought I had the sawhead covers smooth enough, but decided they were not good enough and do not want to waste decals. Sand blasting now to get all the old paint off.

My mill came from the factory with a 20 horse diesel but by the time I acquired it, it had the 24 horse Onan.

I would rather have diesel, but the weight difference makes me think again. I am happy with the Onan.

Antioch01, your mill looks like new money.  Is it in Plant City or Murphy?  The pictured topography looks flatter than Murphy and I think I see Spanish Moss so I would suspect P.C.

When I select the "click here to add photos to post",,, it opens my picture file on computer,, when I select the picture it just keeps uploading it to my album,,, not the post,, when I copy the file description from the album and paste in the post all I get is the description,,, no pic.
I do not see the page you reference,,,, somehow I did get that page when I did the post that has the pic,, but have not been able to find that page again.

Caveman,,, I see you are in Lakeland,,, did not think there were any sawmills in Florida,, had a hell of a time trying to find one down here. They all seem to be from Alabama, Georgia and North from there.
Glad to see you are in the area,, looks like you have done a lot of pine,,, I have questions on trying to keep the pitch build-up to a minimum.

Thanks, had to sand blast to get all the rough areas clean and the old decals off,,, Rustoleum brown primer,,,, Rustoleum Orange,,,, I read a lot of different variations of mixing safety orange and yellow etc. The Rustoleum Orange matched the color under the decals that pealed off and were virgin original color, very well. And availability of the paint for touch up made it a no-brainer for me. All black is Rustoleum semi-gloss.

Bought both the tail light housings, 4ea. stainless back support covers from Woodmizer as well as all the new style decals.
I already had the stainless 5" tubing here for the loader cross tube, just had to cut it in half with 4 1/2" cut-off grinder with .045 wheel. Mounted with 1/4" stainless bolts, also used all stainless bolts, nuts and washers every where else except jacks, used the steel bolts for strength and stainless nuts and washers.

It seems that Rustoleum has several lines of paints with more than one orange in each.  Which one did you use?  Thanks.

Rustoleum 7769830 Rusty metal primer and Gloss Orange 214084, it is available in spray cans for touch-ups. That was the main reason for using it,,, Lowes stocks it here.

So far I am happy with the coverage etc,,,,, but the paint is also new, we will see how it holds up. At least the mill is not going to sit out in the weather any more,, it will be under cover for the most part. Other wise I would not have taken the time to restore it.

Rustoleum paint is good but the nozzles stink.  I always invert and blow the paint out.   Maybe that is the plan because you can't clean them.  I use Krylon instead.  The nozzles are self cleaning and never clog.

Rustoleum paint is good but the nozzles stink.  I always invert and blow the paint out.   Maybe that is the plan because you can't clean them.  I use Krylon instead.  The nozzles are self cleaning and never clog.

I was talking about the brush on stuff.

The nozzles can be cleaned with music wire. I do it all the time.
Also sometimes if you just tale it off the can and smack it on something hard
with the inlet hole down is all that's needed. I also keep a small can of used nozzles
on my shelf to use when I can't get one to unplug.

These new cans are all angle spray,, so you can't invert them to clear the nozzle any more,, I use to do the same thing. The great thing is you don't have to hold the can vertical.
