:) The other day I was sitting around with a long face,
wanting to saw, no jobs. Telephone rings, an old codger
about 15 miles from my house is going to cut enough
oak for barn and fencing, he owns large ranch.
Thirty minutes later, phone rings, man with high pitch
voice on other end unloading logs in his loader wants to
know if I can come to his woodyard for several weeks.
Part of his help quit, LT300 broken down, other wood-mizer
on yard belongs to another man, he sold it.
Mountains of red oak, white oak, cherry and cypress. I was
in grocery store late this afternoon, local banker in small
town down the road, says, don' you have one of those sawmills?
Why yes I do. He has several acres of large, large pine, old
growth, wants to know if I can cut it for him.
The answer is yes---Great week!!!!!

Bud Man

I just happen to know of a good tally man that's got his feet proped up that's available to tally and partially supervise the operation !!  Just 3 1/2 hrs. away, a phone call and I'm on my way !!   8)

Pretty soon you will be looking forward to those days of "no work" and be subcontracting out to other woodmizers.

:) I think the reason this is working for me is because this
is all I have to do, I thought I was retired.
I can cut any time, there are some weekend warriors
around here. Talked to one the other day, he is parking
his mill, don't have time to cut, he will send any calls my
way, I bought his lunch ,brought him to look at my mill. I
bought a tool box from his brother, bragged on their good service
I have met some very nice people to talk about sawmilling
I am talking down to earth folks

Bud Man

I can wack a tally sheet with the best of em, worked 2 years developing  yield tables for Weyerhauser. Gave some thought to Masters in Forest Mensuration. Got a sharp pencil !!

I kind of felt you guys were putting way too much worry and effort in finding work. :D

Won't be long before you'll appreciate an evening without a call or someone showing up with a load of logs. ;)

Just remember;  All work and no play...  ???? how's the rest of that go??

I told you to go fishing and not worry about the work.  "Buy the mill and the work will come."  Now you will be sorry that you did not go fishing.  This sawmilling will over whelm you if you do not watch out.  It is the second week of turkey season and I have only been in the woods to cruise timber and forgot my shotgun.  Do it right and do them good and it is like running down hill, easy till you get to going so fast that you fall on your face. :D

:) No tally yet. 15 foot 4/4 boards get heavy when you don't
have Elvis around but !/2 days. White oak and red oak
knots will give the blade fits. Trucks still rolling in to
the wood yard where I am set up. Back is a little sore
but, that is to be expected. Flipped a 15 foot 7x9 cant
right over stops. I thought I was retired!!

JoeyLowe

Mike:

Are you tailing your own boards?  I tried that one day and swore off on it.  I had to in my case to finish the job, but never again! ;D ;D ;D ;D (at least I hope)

Those cants can be a little "cantankerous" too, eh? ::)

Sounds to me like you're putting too much work into it.  After a couple of years, you'll figure out ways to make things a little easier.   ;)

I've still got problems to work out with the cup holder. :D
