We got this one crossing Route 1 in Cyr Plantation in the heart of Potato country.

If that is as close as you get how the heck do you herd them?

And a young Whitetail a few miles down the same road.

Ummmm... that's about as close as you'd want...  those things can get lethal at close range.   They break off at the knees and the heavy parts go sailing through the passenger compartment. ..  and you.

This lil one showed up an hour ago.

I saw tracks down by the wood yard of a moose. Did not see it. Have not seen any tracks since. I may not even see the moose. Not really moose country around here. But saying that, they took 2 moose off from the top of the hill last year.

Yes it is. :D
I made it last year with a sheet of marine plywood covered with outdoor carpet.  The tees are made of rubber gas line that I put in tightly drilled holes.  They hold the ball up in 40 mile per hour gusts of wind. ;)
I'm not a Golfer or fan of the game but our guests get a kick out of it.  A friend of mine used to live on a golf course and gave me a couple boxes of balls.  I made myself a ball retriever stick from a tiki torch and pick them up while mowing.
Same Deer on this video.  I had stopped recording by accident and got more footage before it went into the woods.

We really have to watch for moose on the road especially in winter. I hit one just after narrowly missing her companion, it wasn't fun for me or the moose. She didn't survive.

Sadly, there are many Moose collisions in this area.
Here's my tiki torch duct tape ball retriever.  It works well.  :)

if you hit and kill one with your car/truck do they let you keep it

Mooseherder

They do here if you still want it but the whole process isn't practical for most people.  Your vehicle is wrecked and you're probably hurt.  The animal suffered trauma and probably suffered a long time before law enforcement arrived to put it down.  Not something I would want to eat.  Processing and storing for unplanned event like this is also problematic.  The animal is usually hauled off to a close by field for the scavengers.

x2 We are not allowed to keep them although I have heard of people putting massive bumpers on the 1 ton and running them down claiming it was an accident. I could have thrown the young cow on the trailer and driven home, she would have been frozen solid but then I would have had to figure out where to thaw and butcher. ;D

Then just a few minutes later a young buck showed up.  He was watching me film him from 30 feet away.

We have salvaged struck animals but timing is crucial. As long as they are bled immediately before bruising takes hold it can work and meat will be good. A friend of mine salvaged a beef cow by ensuring it was bled within a minute of it being hit and it was hanging ready for cutting very soon after. I've known folks who weren't so fussy letting things be for some time but I don't think I'd want to smell that meat. Not important info just info I had between my ears and I have so little of it I thought I'd better share what I do have!  :)
