I finally have my solar kiln up and operating, but I have not purchased a meter to measure the temperature and humidity.  The kiln is in an area without electricity so I will need one that is battery powered.

I will only be going by on a weekly basis so I am wondering if I should consider a data logger that plugs into my laptop to download the data?

We never used such measurements to run the kiln.  A meter is not needed and the readings will, not change how you operate the kiln.  More importantly is the daily moisture content of the wood, especially above 50% MC. But even those readings are not critical with the VT design and operation.

You can get a battery operated temp/ humidity meter from eBay for less than 5 dollars.

The sensors are on around 6 feet of wire.
Its interesting to watch what's going on inside the kiln.

They are meant for reptile terrariums.
