24hp Portable PTO Unit
« on: March 28, 2017, 02:33:08 pm »

I have read and understand the terms of the Classified section of the Forestry Forum.

I got for sale a used REN MFG. HD-24 Portable Power Take-Off Unit.  I bought this used from a fella up in Maine.  He did a bunch of little TLC stuff to it before I got it and I've done some more.  I bought this to power my Hakki Pilke 1x37 firewood processor.  I've run two cord through the unit, it runs the processor, BUT, not up to my standards.  Once warmed up it runs the machine as designed but I have trouble running 2 functions at once (example - splitting and cutting) and that in turn made it take longer to produce a cord of wood.  The portable unit is just lacking a little in the HP department, and that is hurting my production.  I think it would work great for somebody doing 20 or so cord a year but I don't think it's right for me.  With all that being said I'll give you the goods on the unit.

Model HD-24
Power is from a Honda V-Twin
New(er) Battery, electric start
Belt drive with a hand clutch
Chain drive to the PTO stub
PTO stub is standard 540, 6 spline
Set up on a stand that is easy to fork around
Unit fits into the back of a pickup (for mobile operation)
I have a new PTO shaft and 2 pillow bearings on order, those are included in the sale.
It will need new chain (#50)and sprockets sooner vs. later, but is usable
Most parts are off the shelf at parts store or ag. supplier

Looking for $2300.  I'll be right up front, I paid $2000 for this rig last fall.  I'll have the $300 into it between the new shaft, bearings, and all the other little stuff I've done to it (plus $ to go to the forum).  Price is always negotiable but there isn't much wiggle room

This might work good on a bale wrapper, or maybe small mill, or PTO generator?

A couple of the shields and the chain are removed in this picture.  I have all the shields, just off for chain maintenance.

Where these really shine is running a hay tedder or lime/fertilizer/manure spreader behind a pickup.  Would also be pretty easy to mount a broadcast seeder with this as power.

47sawdust,

I was hoping this unit was gonna work for me, it just seems a little light in the HP dept.  I really like the idea of it, heck I searched pretty hard to find a used one!  I've got to replace the PTO shaft and bearings (came in last night), put on a new chain and give it another shot.  Pretty sure I'd be better off with a small (older) 2wd tractor, that I could leave on the processor most of the time and use around the farm when something else breaks down...

I was interested in one of those till I tried a 22 hp diesel.  It did not have the jam needed. So I run my palax off a 150 CIH USE A 540 TO 1000 PTO adapter and just run the tractor pto at the 460 rpm. Going to hook up a 100 hp deutz Engine  coop tractor to it as a dedicated power source. Then the CIH will be used for loading the log deck.

Installed new PTO shaft and pillow bearings yesterday.  Also has a new drive chain.  Gonna give it another try on the processor in the AM after making all my adjustments.

Does it have a hydraulic pump on it too?  I've thought about one of these for my little Balfor so I could use the tractor at the same time.

No sir, no hydro on this model.  I know some of the REN units come with a pump.

Was talking with a palix dealer and he said you really need 30 hp or more to run them efficiently.
Did you try it again.

Yeah, we ran a cord through it Sunday AM.  Was better, warmer weather helped, gonna try to switch up a pulley or two in the next couple weeks.  Gonna keep trying different stuff, it'll either work or be brand new when somebody buys it!

Here is Video that we took of the Unit running my processor on Sunday.

note: this is my first time posting a link to a youtube video, I hope it works and I did it correctly.  Not sure how to get the video direct into this thread.  Give me a big and I might figure it out!
