I live down in Louisiana and will be mostly cutting Oak and Cypress.  Working with wood is a hobby of mine not a full time job.  My question is can I get away with milling on a 660 using a 42in bar vs having to get the 880?  I'll only use it for milling maybe 5 times a year on trees with a diameter of about 3-4ft.

For occasionally milling I would go with the 660 and the 42"bar.  Just make sure that the chain are sharp maybe using a skip chain to keep up chainspeed and take the time with it.

Upgrade to a HD oiler or convert the oiler with HD piston and control screw

If using the Alaskan Mill you can get a olier kit to mount at the tip of the bar for additional lubrication.

I've got a flat top 066 magnum, it pulls a 42" bar and skip tooth chain with ease.

That is my exact setup.  660 - 36" mill - 42" bar.  Keep in mind that a 36" mill is maxed out at 33" so you have plenty of beef with the 660 and skip is optional. I use 10/50/10 comp semi chisel.

Thanks everyone for knowledge  ;D

Mix your fuel at 40:1 instead of 50:1 too.  The long periods at full throttle are harder on the cylinders.
