276T 440C skidder. Yes it had a sleeve on the crank. The seal I got with rebuild kit must be put on as 1. The sleeve on the crank has a flange so the part on bell must be on first. Meant to install as 1 piece, clear as mud right?

I have installed them without the tool. It's a lot better with the tool! The trick is to drive it a small bit on the crank then a small bit into the housing. There is a little play in the seal itself, don't go over this or you will damage it. Hold the outside and move the inside piece of the seal to gauge how much you can tap it to a time.

Do you have the engine out of the machine? How far away is your dealer? If it's not too far, and their shop rate isn't too terrible, I'd call and see if you could bring the engine to them and wait while their tech installed the seal with the right tool. If you had the old one out and things cleaned up, I think that would be the best way to get the seal installed. Probably best if you bought the seal from them, too.

I use on of those thin wheel nut sockets , can't remember what size.  But there is one size that will touch both parts of the seal, put an extension in it and knock it in like  a wheel seal.

Engine out did a complete rebuild. Bought a rebuild kit with seal. This seal is NOT meant to be pushed in with both parts at the same time unless there is a step in the installer
