Rafter Seat Cutting Procedure
« on: January 09, 2017, 07:39:24 am »
Im building my second timber frame structure, to shortly after lead into my third.

My first, because i was nervous, and trying to beat the snow, i decided to do what i would call a conventional roof structure, with a simple birds mouth, etc.

Im ready to go for the timber frame roof system.  Im studied up on everything but the rafter seats. Ive poked around online trying to find a step by step, but with no Success.

Was wondering your guys procedure for cutting rafter seats in the top plate. Which cut first, do you use a jig, do you use a visual guide?  I have some what an idea but want to check.

Im lucky enough to have a fellow member and timber framer answer all my daily questions and concerns via text all day.  Id like to spare him this time from pressing all those tiny buttons.  :D

What type of seat are you asking about?
A stepped lap rafter seat?
