Need any suggestions or information on building a top saw on circle mill

sealark37

The one top saw that I have seen in operation was mounted on a very substantial husk frame that supported both the main and top mandrels.     Regards, Clark

You could check out Hurdle mills. Maybe they have some pics. A top saw would involve a lot of work.

Mandrel or electric motor drive on a 4 post stand,

The big circle saw builders have them
a simple Google search will uncover them

In principal the topsaw is a simple device but in practice a lot of fiddling. I had one and sold it. If you must I would run a smallish saw with an electric motor on a heavy duty steel frame. Bit width must match headsaw. Frank C.

A breakdown rig without a top saw would be unusual here. They aren't real complex: get your spacing right so the bottom saw is clear before the top cuts through, overengineer everything because the weight of saw (and the logs that need it) requires it, make sure your feed can handle the slower pace. .. then change your breakdown pattern to use it as sparingly as possible. Nothing technical about it.
The quickest way to make a million dollars with a sawmill is to start with two million.

I sawed a lot of big logs without a top saw.  The vertical edger helped quite a bit on big logs.  Never had a need to chainsaw the cut.  You just have to think your breakdown a little differently when you saw a big log.

Here's a photo of a line belt driven top saw.
Maybe some good ideas to pick over before you start your build.

Hey Jeff, does that West Branch show still happen? I would love to see that big bugger run!
Everyone has to be somewhere.

Yea, but I'd have no idea if the big saw would be there. It would come in from Missouri.
