Folks,
The mysterious noise while turning in the rear left tire on my 330  finally surfaced and wiped out the planetary and axle gear quite nicely. I found a hairline crack in the ring gear that might explain the noise while turning but based on handfuls of broken teeth from the pinion gears we'll never know for sure.
Here's my dilemma....I have the TJ p/n's but when I talk to dealers and a few shops that specialise in axle parts these p/n's don't do much good. Ring gear is 400604, pinion gears 400573, sun gear is 400572. Does anyone know if there is an assy number for the planetary etc or where I can find manufacturers p/n's ?? Diff tags etc long gone. Covers aren't much help, they have Timberjack stamped in them....
Any help would be most appreciated....and Happy Boxing Day !!!!! Grand daughters here around 3pm so it's gonna be a fun afternoon !!! ;D
I knew she was a keeper when she told me to buy the old skidder !!!!!

Can't help with the p/n's but the Rockwell's usually have the numbers stamped on the part. I don't know the number of axle that is but it is the middle one in the Rockwell's used in forestry, same as a 230D, 217D,etc. I'm sure someone will chime in with the axle number for you, have fun with the grandkids.

redneck

you could try timberparts in sussex there number is (506) 433-5578
they have lots of old manuals and books last time I was in there.  they also have a good selection of used parts for my old skidder.

As they are Rockwell, going from memory they should be a Rockwell pr75 or pr76. Both these have the same planetaries.

You just have to love the amount of knowledge on this forum. From how to fix you machinery to how to smoke some meat.
Give me a new saw chain and I can find you a rock in a heartbeat.

Now if you combine the two you might be on to something. I know a place in Town by Me that used to rebuild starters and sold Homemade Sub Sandwich's. :o

Spartan

You could call Aftermarket Parts in (Carolina?)
They might be able to look it up by application, they would carry the aftermarket replacement parts.
They filled me in on my older tj 450.

coxy

can you take a pic of the rear and planetary some of us may be able to help by looking at the planetary cover

David-L

Like Coxy said, pic of the cover would help.
In two days from now, tomorrow will be yesterday.

Hey Gents,
Well it seems that my old TJ330 has pretty standard axles in it as an outfit called Bull Industrial from Sudbury, Ontario had everything in stock including the planetary carrier. The carrier was cracked in a number of places all of which opened up when they put it in the hot solution parts cleaner !! So it's going back together this week with a whole new wheel end and then I'll spin it around in the garage and pull the opposite end of the axle. Might as well check it out before I flush the diff oil and re-fill etc. Good time to change that seal as well.
Does anyone know the torque value for the axle nut ?? Mine was nowhere near tight enough when I dis-assembled .
Appreciate the input and the ideas......
Not sure if we're allowed to put a plug in for a non-sponsor, but for my Canadian FF folks these guys in Sudbury know their stuff for axles, diffs etc!

coxy

so what where they eaton Rockwell what  :)

ehp

Bull is a good place to deal with, I have bought lots from them over the years . clark trannys sure is a lot cheaper from them than a dealer

deereguy, pretty tight actually. i don't have the torque but remember how heavy the drive, tire and wheel are. you don't want any weight on the panetary gears. i always pack the new bearing then tighten it with a long bar until its very hard to turn, back off just slightly but not enough to free wheel. it will get loose enough with use.

coxy

we do the same thing and never had any trouble

deerguy

Thanks for the advice on tightening the axle nut. I gave up on a torque value, it won't make a difference when I'm done tightening the nut up real tight. Working for a bearing manufacturer, I could get our Engineers to calculate the value, but with worn journals etc the bottom line is it needs to be tight !
My biggest problem has been sourcing a 4 1/4" socket for the axle nut. My local parts guys can't find one to buy anywhere. Seems they can get 4 1/8 and 4 3/16 but not the one I need. Seems weird but that's what they tell me. Local machinist is making me a six point socket with a 6" barrel so I can leave axle shaft in while I tighten the nut.
Tried the picture upload thing again....don't think I'll ever figure that out.
Those oring seals and carriers are a bit of a pain, we'll see how well this one seals up before I take another planetary out.

Deerguy  doesn't Napa or Traction have OTC wheel end sockets for heavy trucks in 4 1/4? I made my own also. I think the torque value is like 400 ft/lbs and back off 1/4 turn.

thecfarm

deerguy,is this the picture??

Here's how I did it,

I like to go to whatever post or start a new topic first to include a picture.Go to your gallery,it will open in a new window.Click onto your album, then click onto whatever picture you want,it will get bigger, than scroll down a little to find,Insert Image In Post, click onto that, click Yes and that is it. Some have to copy/paste the link to work.I like to hit the enter key at least once or twice to move the picture down away from what I am typing. The enter key really helps to leave some white space if posting more than one picture or posting a comment. Use the preview button to see how it looks and modify it if needed.

All the above looks like a lot,but is it not a lot to do. After you do it,2-3 times,it's easy. The hard part of making an album and putting it in is done.

that looks like a pr 75  also looks like it has the steel pins I like the brass ones better

deerguy

Thanks thecfarm, I appreciate you pulling that pic and setting up the instructions. I figure it just takes practice so we'll keep plugging away at it.
Coxy, you are right it is a PR75 assy, and it does have the brass pins. They were all bent beyond re-use, so the new carrier has the steel pins with the teflon liner/bushing carrying the planetary gears. They told me brass pins obsolete. Entire axle is Rockwell, which at least up here where I live is good news as the parts are still available. OtC skips the 4 1/4" size according to my local Napa and other shops. I considered an 8 tooth hub socket, but the teeth would ride on the journal thread and I fear messing up the threads. Custom socket ready today, so we'll give it a go later this afternoon.
