My son just sent me this photo. We have 50 mph wind gusts today and he is working just down the road from this in McBain Mi.

Not so great Jeff.

One about 30 miles from me in Lower West Pubnico NS threw a blade last year.

I took a picture of it last May

I never even heard of a turbine burning. I saw a bunch idling the other day. Was that because of the gust?

Looks like green energy to me :D :D

Cost a lot of money to capture that free energy..  some wind turbines furl (turn sideways to the wind) to prevent damage in high winds.  I've played w/ a couple home built ones using pm motors.. I didn't have a dump load set up.. so when it was windy.. I'd have a converter running a halogen shop light to keep the voltage in the norm range.  The battery voltage acts like a break on the turbine.

Den Socling

Your right. I was looking into this and they are suppose to furl. I guess that's what I saw the other day. A bunch of furled turbines.

I've been trying to think of the sailing term. It's luffing when you let a sail blow loose in the wind. I guess furling is similar.
