Not sure if this is the right board for this or not. I need to buy a new router/modem and know squat about them. Looking for a little advice please. We don't do gaming so that's not a concern.

When I'm looking to buy or upgrade a piece of technology I look at the reviews from:

     http://thewirecutter.com

The reviews are detailed, informative, and usually up-to-date. They look at alternatives and describe the +/- of each unit they review.

Routers are reviewed here, dated 8/22/2016:

Cable modems (4/8/2016) are reviewed here:

I hope that helps.

We have a Netgear. Works great. We did have Linksys. Not impressed. Seem like once every 3-4 months if would not work. After the warrenty trouble shooting ran out we had to pay a sevice fee,of $70 to get help, that was it, sevice fee was good for a year. Than when that ran out and we had trouble again, the rounter went into the OWB.  :D  Got the Netgear and had it 2-3 years and never once had to call them because of no sevice. Kinda odd we had bunches of trouble with one device and none with another.  :(  ;)

We use a TPLink ADSL here.

They aren't top of the line, but I call them more "Cheap and Cheerful" in that they just work.  If you get hit by lightning they all fry the same.

Because the TPLinks are so cheap, you can basically buy 2 and have a spare.   ;D

I've had a Linksys now for 3 years no troubles except one time when upgrading to windows 10 the router also needed an update, but that was easily dealt with.  :) I can run my older laptop in the basement no troubles and laptop in my room and two playstations for movies off playstation store, youtube and crackle. :)  My DSL modem is Speedstream from the company. We can get FibreOp here, but I don't need it.

Without knowing any better Lindy bought a TP link AC1900 but it's a router only.   :-\

I use Asus equipment. Seems to work as advertised.

I don't know the market, but the modem we have did not have enough single strength to send through the house, that is why I have a separate router. We have to use what the company has as far as modem.

Guess I'm a little confused.  The phone company that provides internet to us provides a router as well.  If I had your situation here I would call my phone company (Frontier) and have another brought out or sent here.  Must be it's not this way everywhere?

They'll rent you a crappy one. Better to but one.

There's no fee on the modem we have here. No set up fee neither.
