I'm giving my buddy's old saw a going over. The manual says to back both screws out the whole way, then turn them in, while using a rev indicator, but I don't have one. Does anyone know the old fashioned method for this saw...............such as, screw in the whole way, then back off X number of turns? I'm heading to the shop for a new spark plug...........

It's probably a Walbro WT. I'd just go: Lightly seated, then L 1.5 turns CCW, H 1.25 turns CCW. Tune from there.

Thanks Doug!!! That's the exact info that I was looking for :) :) :)

It would start, but not run, on those L & H settings, unless I held the throttle open. I adjusted the idle screw, but that didn't change anything. I wasn't really sure how to proceed, and being someone else's saw, I didn't want to do anything to cause damage, so I threw in the towel, advising my buddy that it likely needed a carb kit. Then, I find out that his Grandpa got it running, without installing a carb kit. Does anyone know what I could have / should have done, to be successful? In my mind, if it wouldn't run, the idle screw adjustment was the right way to go, as L & H adjustments only get done after a saw can sit and idle. Always learning :)

Sounds like you needed TAS/Idle screw in - CW - throttle connector is past the taper = maxed out. Or leave saw on high Idle (if equipped). You can try different H-L combos. L-2.0 out, H -1.5 out or L-1.0 out, H-.75 out. In the limited run time as you tune, you're not going to hurt P,C or R even if H-L is a little lean.
Doing multiple saws is the best teaching tool.

OK
What is P, C or R?

Piston, cylinder or ring(s). Another point to consider is: if the carb diaphragms - fuel pump and metering - are getting a little stiff, the saw will be harder to tune. It may run but will be quirky because different volumes of fuel may be delivered.
