Never finished one before, any one here has?  Curious as to what stain you used, this old chest is very pale for cedar, and I find no red cedar stain.

Have done many of them...Absolutely Top-of-the-line for their time. DO NOT use oil based stain on cedar...it will not take in any meaningful way. if you must change the color, you can use an aniline dye (2 parts red, 1 part yellow). That will get you close to antique cedar. better still, you can get back some of that dark orange color by sanding past the UV damaged lid and front (after the old finish is stripped). Also, when applying new finish, use a wax free Shellac as a barrier coat (sealer). Lacquers and Poly do not always dry well over the knots. Also, if your chest has the copper banding, leave it in place and work around it (mask it off). just before you begin finishing, burnish only the high spots and edges with #0000 steel wool. perhaps you can post some pics of your progress.
