How big of a difference did you feal between the 460,and 465. In canda we haven't got the 465 yet I couldn't even find it on the Canada in website. How do you like the auto tune

weimedog

It is better in person than in the video. A lot to do with the bar and chain setup. Right now I have a 18inch Sugi with a fresh loop of LGX. That really woke it up.

460 vs. 465? The 460 is a tried and true saw that cuts way better than its given credit for. It's more "familiar" to me right now...ask me that question in a few weeks!

On the 460 side:
Price
Better power than you would expect
A proven reliable design
Fuel Usage

On the 465 side
Snaps to hold the cover...easier to keep clean
Large mount bar.
Advertised more power..it has more but not as much more as you would expect based on the advertised rating. ( 460 3.62HP  465 4.29HP )

Both start easy, the Autotune has the potential to be better across the seasons. Time will tell.

Yeah it seams like a big jump in advertised power for 5 cc difference. The mufflers look like they are the same. Have you tried any muffler mod and other performance mods on a 460

I agree. But yet again there are factors. Bob's 460 was just running crisp all day and the chain was perfect. ( So much for me teasing him about chains!) Little things like the 460 was an 18inch B&C while the 465 had a 20inch B&C. The 465 ran well but the chain was way off. I tried to get it sharp but never was able to get it to cut as smooth as the chain on that 460. Also the 460 was well broken in and that means something. The 465 has maybe a couple of tanks. He ran it at the GTG at The Cutting Edge and here. Not certain it got much more run time. All those little things add up, the "break in time", the longer bar, a chain not sharp. I have been running another Bar & Chain combo on the 465 and it makes a noticeable difference.

Yeah when I was at the dealer they had the 455 with a 20" they were on sale and the 460 wasn't but he told me for 70 extra dollars I could get a 24" on the 455 I thought he was mad. The hardest wood we have is birtch but still. When I got my ms 290 my dad asked if it would pull a 24 inch bar they said no and I would lose warranty on the clutch. I allways thought if you had a 10 inch tree you could cut it with a 16 or a 60 inch bar. Same number of teath in the wood its the friction of the longer chain that robs the power I wouldn't think between an 18 and a 20 would have that much difference

SawTroll

Two inches does matter if the saw already is on the edge of what it can do, but otherwise not so much (provided the wood is the same).

I assume the different chain was the main factor in this case, and comparing saws without using the same chain on both generally is a bad idea.

The referred hp numbers for both saws are hp(i), the kW numbers indicate more like 4.4 vs 3.7 hp(m). Hp(m) is what most saws are rated in, regardless if the brand calls it hp or bhp - so I don't really understand why Husky are rating their newer saw models in hp(i)....

Both hp(m) and hp(i) really are bhp, it was the ol' calculated SAE gross hp that wasn't.

Tell that to Bob! He gave me a rash of crap when I went there relative to bar length!  :)

I think alot of people forget farming and ranching is supposed to take all day lol. I think you guys need an old homlite or McCullough with a gear drive and a skip chain. Sort of like eating a cracker while tasting wine to reset you pallet. That way you wont be set on pro saw mentality lol

Pretty funny..:) Have to say that 460 may show up more than in the past and the 465 certainly will. We really would like to do a video on Mac's problem is while Bob has a few that are relevant....I don't. When I was still stupid...(does that ever go away?) I traded two amazing saws away, a 797 and a Mercury Outboard powered Disston and spend as much on shipping them as I could have spent simply buying what I wanted....but being a man of my word...I went through with it anyway...:( (Several years ago now). The only McCulloch I own is a 660 Gear drive. Needs some TLC to get it running... SO when I come up to speed and acquire a Mac or two, a Mini GTG & Video will happen..:)

I spent a little more time on the 460's chain, cause Walt is always complaining about my sharpening. The 465 chain had some time on it. So, I suppose the results prove Walt's point, not that I'd admit it publicly on a website or anything. The 465 was on it's 4th tank in that video. We should have tached it to see where it was turning, but I had left my tool kit back at the sugar shack. I left the saw up there cause Walt wasn't done playing with it. A muff mod experiment is in the works.

Now, on this silliness about 18 vs 20 inch bars making a difference, I disagree from a pratical viewpoint. Even with both bars completly in the wood, there's only 2 or 3 cutters extra drag there. That may be measurable for people inclined to do such things.  :) , and we know who you are. In a 12' log, there's the same amount of cutters in the wood, same amount of drivers in each sprocket. Any differences there, measurable or not, are far too insignificant to be part of the dialog IMO.

Despite the endless yacking that we both did, one point may not have been made: The idea wasn't so much to compare those saws to the pro models we usually run in that situation such as 562's and 372's, as the Ranchers will certainly come up short in such a comparison. They should be looked at as a capable step up from the typical 45-50cc homeowner saws that many regular guys own. If that end user needs "more saw", can the Ranchers get it done, and the answer is yes.

And we really want to do a Mac vid for the next "old saw" history series. I've got a decent mix of Pro-Mac models if Walt can't locate something. He does have a habit of getting rid of saws and later wishing he still had them.  :D
