I have eaten goat in Mexico, but sure don't have to leave the country to eat it.
I haven't been there in several years, but even as a kid, anytime we passed through brady Texas we were in for a treat of barbequed goat, hope the place is still there.

Kbeitz, Keep your eyes open for a droid max phone in a black otter box. One of those fine fellas out front of the airport, the one who insist on helping with your luggage, helped himself to my phone that was in the see through pocket on my back pack last fall. I realized it was missing after clearing customs and they wouldn't let me go back outside. You should've heard me in southern slang trying to explain what had just happened to the one security guy that spoke very little english :D :D :D :D

You've got to be careful.
I had a friend who was from Mexico in the early 80's. We would meet in Nuevo Laredo about 3 or 4 times a year. One time I decided I wanted to eat Cabrito for lunch. He told me that a lot of the goat served for lunch today, were the losers on the greyhound track yesterday.

I guess the moral to this story is: It's a good idea to have someone who knows your meat supplier when in other places.  ;D

I remember one "restaurant" that had a fire and live goats tied up out back. PETA must not have much of a foothold in Mexico.  :D

I'm going to have some neat trees to post pictures of when I get back home.
Today I took pictures of a cashew tree. Tommorow I'm snapping pictures
Of the biggest tree I'll probley ever see in my life time.
I just found out the name of the tree is Ceiba Arbol.
It´s  used throughout history to fill mattresses, pillows, tapestries, and dolls.
Also to extract oils used to make soap and fertilizers.
The species can grow to 70 m (230 ft) tall or more.

It depends how good are your fences and how much spunk is in the particular goat.  Goats are like clever five year olds with permanent sugar high  ;D

Some of them can be contained, but a goat with real character will give you run for the money and many stories to tell  :)

Out here, fields of dry grass, poison oak or blackberries are cleared by goats.  They set up temporary hot wire fencing to keep them concentrated in one area.  They run like 500 head on a few acres for a little while and them move them on.  They can decimate an area pretty quickly!  The owner will set up a camper trailer and some will have dogs to protect the herd.

Our local landfill has a herd of goats. I don't know where the first ones came from but there's now a bunch. At first there was a big stink (pun intended) because there wasn't supposed to be any livestock in the township. They got a variance and the goats have kept the weeds and bushes under control since then.

There was someone who advertised bringing goats to eat poison ivy vines . They also sold soap from the goats milk saying it would help heal poison ivy rash ?

I have a hound dog that will run anything I put him on so my guess is a goat would be no problem. Anyone know if they eat wood and brush or just grass?

thecfarm

I have goats. And I really like them. I had them keep the brush down in a grown up pasture. Mine was not big on grass, but they loved the bushes that was  trying to grow there. Not talking about bushes a foot high either, even though I bet they would eat them,no more than 6 inches high.

Goats prefer junk over "good" feed. My sister gave one of her goats a big block of alfalfa hay. It used it as a step stool to eat a bunch of maple leaves.

Do a little research all breeds of goats are not created equal, some breeds are much better at clearing brush than others, they will litterally trim everything that they can reach by standing on their hind legs.

I think I need a goat... Big question 1 or 2?  A girl down the street has a few she makes soap with and I saw them yesterday and to me they seem like really big dogs. Lots of personality and they love human attention.

gspren

Goats are herd animals and like company so get at least 2-3, get nannies (females). I raised goats for over 20 years and for ease of keeping liked the Boar or Boar cross breeds as they don't jump as much as some of the dairy breeds.

Goats are pretty big business around here right now, setting record high prices.  A guy has a pen full of them next to the sale barn I work at, I get a kick out watching him put them in everyday  :D.  They really don't seem that hard to handle but he does have good fence around them and he's a little burned out if you know what I mean so the human factor maybe figuring in a little.  I'll have to get a picture sometime, he just pulls a trailer in with a bale of hay on it and leaves it there, the goats will be up on the trailer, on top of the bale, and eating from the ground  :D.

starmac

I have a funny story about a cantankerous billy.
When I was a kid we went to the sale barn s pretty often, once someone brought this huge billy, that just kept jumping from pen to pen and startung ruckuses with the beef cattle. When the sale started it was the very first thing they sold. A mexican man with something like 8 kids bought him. In a little while he was leaveing, so I told my dad I was going to go watch him load him.
It turned out he was driving about a 68 4 door impala, he tied the goats feet together and put him in the back seat, and put half or more of his kids in the trunk and drove off. I sure got a kick out of that.

My father tells a story about his grandfather and a goat. It seems that this big old goat got into the house and was found on top of the dining room table. It was last seen sticking is head out of the back window of a big Chrysler on sale day. :D

When I was a kid I bought a white Billy goat from a neighboring farm. I stained his horns with cherry wood stain. He looked like a holy terror.  :D One day I got home from school and found out the goat had kept the next door neighbors trapped in their house all day. Every time they would try to sneak out a door that goat would hear them and butt them back inside. He didn't last long after that. I think my cousin ate him.  :-\

I've had female and male goats. The rubber band is what makes a male goat fun to be around. If given a choice,it does not matter to me. We always had the Nubian or Alpine or a mix. The trick is to bottle feed them and being touched by humans as soon as they are born. I had 3 that would follow us around like a dog. I don't have any bad goats story, just good ones.  ;D  I do miss having them. I had 3 all trained. A sharp, quick  out, out, out, and they would leave the wife's flowers alone or whatever they was trying to get into inside the garage. Kinda like a little child, everything goes into the mouth.
