Our wood's understory is slowly being overtaken with "spicebush".  On the positive side, the deer love them for cover and the birds love the berries.  However, they are becoming absolutely a monoculture, deer won't browse them, and they eventually shade out everything else, including hardwood saplings.  FWIW, our woods are mainly Oaks (white, chestnut, black, crimson), Tulip poplar and Beech with a minor component of cherry, hickory and an understory of red maple and black gum.  What are my options for limiting the spread of the spicebush?  I don't want to use glyphosate since we raise bees that forage in our wood.

hello fellow beekeeper, I to have the problem of controlling unwanted plants, and not hurting the bees.
with me it is blackberries. i do this where i do not want the blackberries. my solution is to remove the adult plants, fence the area, and put goats into the fenced area. Goats LOVE new blackberry shoots.

Blackberry nectar makes Great honey. I have 3 hives.
