Juglans major The walnuts are less than half the size of the eastern black walnut, with smooth surfaces and a milder flavor. These trees can get quite large, up to six feet thick and 100' crown spread. Pretty much confined to riparian areas.

Anyway, one died down by the river, so now it is lumber. Have a look.


  

  

  

  

  

  

  

 
The wood tends to be more streaky, with more color variation and more movement than eastern black walnut.
This is the species where thousand cankers lives, so it will probably be the source for genetic resistance when we start to breed for that.
