So......hmm.  I guess he's asking prices per board foot in thicknesses from 3/4" to 1"?  Or the price differences between 3/4" and 1"?  Or that he'll accept anything sawed from 3/4" to 1"?  And the minimum diameter for the small end for the logs that......what?, he'll bring you?

And my favorite when I go see the logs is for them to ask me "What would you make out of this?"

I always tell them I'd make whatever I needed lumber for then find what they want to build and advise what kind of lumber works for what applications.

The message becomes much clearer when you consider that it was sent while the sender was going down the road at 75 mph.   Regards, Clark

This 236 mile customer falls into that category.  He sold his hardwood and got a good price and then tried to sell the Pine.  He refused $25 per ton for sawlogs, so he called me.  He had no clear understanding of what he had or even what he wanted which was obvious on the telephone, but he seriously had some logs that he wanted sawn into something.  That plus he has more trees to take down.  He is planning to build a 7k sq ft, barn with a 2k sq ft home inside.  Yes, it is a long drive, but it easily will be a $10-$15k job.  He is paying travel plus lodging and I am willing to spend a couple of weeks away from home for that.   :)

I had a local farmer bring 5 logs last weekend to be sawn. We had the first log on the mill and he still didn't know what he wanted sawn out of the logs. He just knew that he didn't wnt the logs to lay around and rot.

sandsawmill14

scleigh i have sawn pine like that and i always saw everything into 2x12  :) that will make it then i can resaw and get 2x4, 2x6, 2x8, and 1x12 without any waste the only thing that dont work out iis a 2x10 :-\  but i would much rather know what to cut up front so i dont have to resaw :)

...my dad once cut 1x22 out of a log cause he needed pine boards but wasn't sure what size  :o

BTW he has large stacks of 1x12 and 1x14 for making the boxes/drawers in furniture out of one solid piece, no glue up required

scleigh

Yeah, I guess it's a blessing in disguise, sometimes, when the customer doesn't know what they want.
He did decide that he wanted everything to be full sized 2x, not the normal 1.5" thickness. So, i cut 2x6's, 4's , stickers and 4x4's to rack it on :D

We are good.   :)

Due to the amount of beetle/drought killed trees I look for an increase in these "know nothing" customers that have logs from dead trees and have no idea what lumber they want.  They just know that they don't want termites to eat it.

I love the guys that know nothing and really dislike the ones that are experts when it comes to lumber and log "knowledge".
