thanks KB.Ok, I Still need that 2 dpt switch in that drawing? I can't find a dpt switch, did you mean spst, spdt, dpst, dpdt, etc? I have those relays like in your drawing, awaiting bases

revid

does anyone know what kind of switch is in the drawing in reply#278? The one 2 PDT going to limit switches.I cant find a switch called that

It's a toggle switch with 6 pins on the back.
The toggle will have 3 positions. Up, down

Kbeitz i read all 16 pages of this thread and got a couple questions. I watched this video on you tube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCjdSc-nLEg I see that the guy who done this video didnt have all the relays and timers and stuff like you have. Looks like he just has the controller and the travel limit switches. My question is if i used a 12 volt tarp motor as you have suggested in other threads would i need all the relays and timers? I just want a simple adjustable speed forward and reverse setup. I had considered going with a hydraulic setup but am interested in the 12v setup. Im like the original poster and not a electrical savy as yourself.

Nope you dont need all that stuff if you find a toggle or drum switch
that can handle the amps of your motors. They will be BIG. My contacts
are rated way more than a normal toggle switch.

Kbeitz in your last post you show a simple set up to drive a motor. I have a few question about adding a drive motor to our mill.

Fist can I use a 12 volts motor to drive the saw head, and what size speed control would you buy to control the speed ? Also
I see you need a drum switch to match the amps of the motor. Would it be best to use a second battery for the motor or can
I use the mill battery ?  I would like to make this a simple as possible and use a chain to drive the saw head. Will need to find
the correct sprocket to get the speed and power. are there gear motor on ebay better then just a motor ?

12 volt stuff works fine. It's harder to find than the 24 volt stuff and you will
need heaver wires and switches for the 12 volts stuff. You wont know what
speed control you will need until you buy your motor. You will need a gearbox
motor or a whole lot of chain and sprockets to get the speed down. You'r mill
battery will work if your engines charging system can keep up. The drum switch
needs to match the amps of the motor if you'r not using contactors or relays.
You also wont know what sprockets you will need until you buy you'r gearbox.
They all come with different ratios. I like using 24v wheelchair motors because
they have low amp draw and they are geared to a very good ratio to match
what we are doing. It's hard to find them in 12 volts. 24v Wheelchair motors are
also continuous duty. Most 12 motors are not. E-bay has 12 volt tarp motors
but then again they are not continuous duty. I don't know how important this
might be but you don't want your motor to get hot from running all the time.

Kbeitz what do you think about this motor for raising and lowering the saw head?

it's a 5th wheel jack motor. Got it with a box of stuff ato a auction a few years ago. Been setting in my shop every since.

I bet that would work good for raising and lowering because you don't use it
all the time. But any of the brush starter type motors like that has a short
life span.

Yeah it was just a thought. Have it laying here doing nothing so I thought I would put it to good use.

If you ever do have a motor problem with it you can use garden tractor
starters parts to repair it. Tons of them at most junkyards.

Hey Kwill, how about putting a space between your pics and text.  Sure makes it a lot easier to read. :)

Kwill,
You will need a shaft that will fit inside (or outside) that fitting.  Then put a spring pin across it to engage the slot.

Well finally got a chance to get bk at my mill. Kbeitz, in post #278 you posted a wiring diagram for me and I thank you for it. Got to ask another favour , can you post how to wire witthout those 2 PDT switches in that diagram? I just have a drum switch, controller with pot to adjust speed and  2 relays . Thanks

Ga Mtn Man

revid-  What is the current rating of your drum switch and how much current (max) will your motor draw?  You may not need the relays at all.

30 amp drum switch and have a wheelchair motor. Relays to protect controller board I thought . Already burnt one up when I slow down travel

Kbeitz

There is a chance that when you slowed down that the motor generated
power back to the control board.

I can't draw a diagram without the schematics of your drum switch.
