Years ago national parks here in Canada used "something" to color the taper sawn wood shingles used on the parks buildings. Red and green are the colors I recall, does any one have any idea what was used? They stayed colored for decades it seems, now they are replacing them with ugly asphalt.

I don't know what they used, but I guess you could use the same ink that they use to color wood mulch.  That's supposed to last a pretty long time.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

The stuff they use for wood mulch has two problems, it fades in direct sunlight, and some of it isn't clour-fast, it runs.

I believe the best way to colour any wood is with a pigment, different chemicals and substances will permanently stain wood.

I remeber seeing a scan of an old article on a site that was a bunch of 'old tyme' tips'n'tricks and one of the subjects was how to colour wood instead of painting. If I find it I'll post it.
