Well tomorrow (Monday the 11th) I'll be finalizing an order on an lt50. Question is should I go with the 47hp or the 35hp. Anyone with experience running either please chime in.

I have a 70 with a 62 cat, if you can afford the higher HP you won't wish you didn't.

Seavee,welcome to the forum.
I have no idea about a WM. I bought a manual mill, comes std,13hp,I upgraded to a 20hp. If it don't break the bank,I would go with the bigger hp. Yes,you may think that is all I need right now. But what about 3-4-5 years down the road?
By the way, what's the lumber going to be used for? Ever been around a mill?

The plan is to slowly work this into a full-time mill. I'm ginger to start some custom cutting I have lined up. Also going to start cutting  for a new house and and 40x50 shop. Being a carpenter and woodworker I have bought and used a lot of mill lumber.  I think the 47hp is about $1600 for the upgrade. I'm leaning that way just seeing if someone feels there's no need for it.

I would do it if you can. I have the 51 HP LT40 Super. When you get the hang of the mill and have everything dialed in for the species and band you are using, you will really be able to fly. @4x4American has a Super with the smaller diesel, he can tell you more about it.

In all the threads I have read here on FF I have yet to see anyway say "I wish I had less hp". For $1600 extra I'd jump all over the upgrade. Good luck and enjoy.

Welcome to the forum. Go with the bigger engine if you can. You won't regret it.

Hello,
The 35 hp Yanmar Diesel engine has the three cylinder and the 47 hp has four cylinders. The 35 hp engine is a little lighter 345 lbs to the 47 hp 400 #. The fuel usage on the 35hp engine is not a measurable difference that I am aware of. The noise level is rated at 89 dba for each engine.

Thanks for the summons, Dave.
Yea, I have the Yanmar 35.9hp diesel and if I were to do it again I'd have gotten the 47hp.  The engine I have isn't bad, but it isn't good either.  :D (I'm just kidding it does allright).  It's just that I could saw even faster with the bigger engine.  I also didn't choose how it came, I picked it up as a year end mill that the dealer had kicking around.

I would recommend the FAO kit (if you plan on doing much portable work), dragback, and lubemizer.  And if you aren't going to have it under cover at any point soon, the full carriage and accuset cover sho ams great.  It is heavy enough that you don't have to weight or tie it down, just set it and forget it.  I like the remote + accuset but have never tried a walk along.  There are certain advantages to both.  If you have bad knees like me (oshgood schlotter's disease) I prefer to do as little walking as possible.  Make sure to get a mess of blades to start out with (IMO, 4 or 7 degree 1-1/4").  They are great mills you can't go wrong with a mizer.  Good luck!

Shoot while you're in the mood to upgrade why not just get an lt70 super wide with DCS lol

Thanks 4x I'll look into the covers at least for the controlls. Marty it seems the 35 and 45 are similar in all but power and weight.  I think I'll deff go 45hp. I'll be in Albermarle in the morning.

Considering the price of a LT 50, $1600 is pocket change (not really but it seems like it)
Go for the bigger engine.
You will regret it in the long term if you don't get the bigger engine. JMO

4x I started this venture looking at going with the lt35. It's only money and I didn't win any last night so I'll have to stick with the 50.

I was just joking around about the 70 WS...I tried to indicate it with the smiley face.  I am just being facetious most of the time, it is hard to convey that through typing..

Welcome, Seavee.

I would say you made the better choice on HP. Like insurance - better to have it and not need it.

The 35 hp is a Yanmar, what is the 47HP.  I'd stay away from a cat engine, way too many problems with them on here and over on the skid loader forum.   Steve

It's a Yanmar too.  They don't offer the Perkapillar anymore, too heavy it was causing problems is one of the reasons I'm aware of.

Well it's official I went with the LT50 with the 47hp Yanmar diesel and the debarker.  I think it will be a great machine. Thanks for the input.

Really Cool!! Did you opt for the command station or remote controls? I have the command station and it can sometimes be a disadvantage but the remote controls look interesting.

Just stayed with the standard controls I think seeing the cut as you walk has some advantages.  Plus  Budget played a bit on options. Kip what do you think the disadvantage is to yours. I would like the input.

You are on the right path. Seeing the cut and hearing as well as feeing the blade and machine running better. The down side can be jogging around the trailer wheel, sawdust shower and trudging threw sawdust pile of it gets too tall just to name a few.

Standard controls = ability to add extensions. Maybe there's a remote option you can do this with too as long as it doesn't have the cat track.

But....the head goes down and back for every board you cut or trim.  Seems like the main difference will be whether you want a walking workout or not.   Mine is a front remote so I don't know what that would be like.

p.s. yes i also think you made the right engine choice.
