Just picked up a new Husky 445. First real chainsaw. I understand that there is a break-in period of some sort. I've never done that with anything I've owned. But I'd rather treat this one right.

I haven't even opened the manual yet. I'm fairly sure it will tell me something about it, but I've also read enough posts on here about other topics that I've come to trust your opinions. So what to do and what not to do before I tackle the 5, 40' pine trees I bought this saw for.

Thanks

Really not much of a break in procedure. New chain will stretch, so keep an eye on that. (and keep it sharp!) Check to see the handle bolts are snug. Then just run it.

Of more importance, was the saw set up properly when you purchased it or did it come in a box? My experience is that they need to have the carb adjusted in order to run right. Out of the box they often accelerate poorly and run a little lean on the hi end.

Break in on XP auto tunes requires running wide open under a load for about 3 minutes, not sure about 445's

445 is a normal carb but has the extra air ports. It's an x-torque motor so run it.  lol
I have seen more than 1 that was actually rich out of the box.

SO....what exactly is different between the 450 and 455?? Don't know a thing about those two saws.. :) And what are the Jonsered counterpart's??

450 is the larger small frame saw...455 is the smaller large frame saw.
They work the same but the 455 is a heavy girl

The harder you run that lil saw now, the more thankful you will be about it down the road. You only get one go at a good break in and the window to do it well is small. Gas pressure seats rings well preventing blowby so you need lots of pressure to properly seat rings and give good seal. You don't achieve this by babying your saw running it soft, you do it under load at wide open throttle. I would not even start the saw until wood is lined up and ready to go. Machining tolerances are much better than times past, so if anything is to go bang, it will do so in short order. Run it hard and achieve a good break in and your 445 will run just that little bit better than the guy down the road with the same saw.

thanks for the replies guys. I read that manual front to back and it didn't say anything about a break in period.

So on to question #38. If I drain the fuel from my saw if it's going to sit idle for more than a month do I really need to worry about running >87 octane?

Don't run it at wide open throttle with no load, and don't make any long duration cuts for the first few tanks. Shorter, full-throttle cuts in wood are best. Keep the chain super-sharp and make sure the depth gauges (rakers) are set at the right height.

Sorry not 450 vs. 455. Quite familiar with the 455. I intended to ask the difference between the 450 and 445.. sorry

Buy a can of good pre -mix and you wont have to drain it, pricey but worth it.

445 = 45.7 cm engine. 450 = 50.2 cc engine.

So they are on the same chassis/cases? analogous to the 345/350 of old? There for when working on a 445 it can be built into effectively a 450?
