POSTON WIDEHEAD

These logs came in this morning. I just sat a spell and looked at them.

Those are going to make some very purdy boards.  I'm relieved it's not a debilitating caprine dermal condition.

Those are some nice logs.  Hopefully one of our knowledgeable foresters will explain to us what causes that.

Pretty interesting.   Hope you will post pics of the lumber.

At first glance I was thinking you went to see a remake of a Johnny Cash concert.......   :)

Cedarman

Scares me when I see those white rings in the logs.  Too many times that ring can be completely rotten and ruin the whole log.  Sometimes you do get the purdy wood.   I am still waiting on a good explanation on why sometimes sapwood will not turn into heartwood too.
I am in the pink when sawing cedar.

mesquite buckeye

We get a lot of streaky ones in our crappy field cedars  ;D ;D ;D in Missouri. These came from a double that yielded about 3-4 eight foot logs from each half to 5-6" at the top. I'm thinking knobby mantles with a place to hang Christmas stockings. Worth millions... :-\   We shall see if they sell at all.

I'll keep my fingers crossed, but haven't seen any serious rot as of now. This one was never pruned and was selected for harvest to test market the knobby mantles. The branches mostly came off one side.
Manage 80 acre tree farm in central Missouri and Mesquite timber and about a gozillion saguaros in Arizona.

The vertical face in the previous post is 9 1/2". Them's some fat rings. Cedars love my bad ground. ;D 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) :snowball:

Too many irons in the fire

YellowHammer

Very nice, but I have to wonder what would cause that?  I see that occasionally, but not to that extent.  I'm thinking $300 mantles.   8)
YellowHammerisms:

Take steps to save steps.

If it won't roll, its not a log; it's still a tree.  Sawmills cut logs, not trees.

Kiln drying wood: When the cookies are burned, they're burned, and you can't fix them.

Sawing is fun for the first couple million boards.

Be smarter than the sawdust

MM - what kind of finish did you use on that ceiling?

Magicman

No finish at all; planed, T&G, and nailed it up.  That is the ceilings, walls, & flooring in the Cabin mud room.  LINK
