New to me spindle sander. It has a 3"x9" "pump drum".  You can vary the amount of air in the bladder to get a harder or softer sanding surface. Saw it on cl for $100 and couldn't pass it up. I have an old American iron sickness. I am going to build a glue-lam sycamore top for it.

Want to form a support group?  I have the same sickness, and have been told its incurable.  Ole well, may as well enjoy it. 8).

It may be a sickness, but at least your are treating it the best you know how!
only have a few chain saws I'm not suppose to use, but will at times, one dog Dolly, pretty good dog, just not sure what for yet,  working on getting the gardening back in order, and kinda thinking on maybe a small bbq bizz,  thinking about it,

I tell my wife it's not a sickness it's medicine that keeps me from being sick.

the acme thread rod and wheel look like an future apple press to me, if the sander doesn't pan out

hackberry jake

Got it moved inside and powered up yesterday. Now I'm gluing up cherry on edge to make a top for it. It has quite a bit of range of motion on the spindle, so building a top for it should be interesting.

What is the vertical ACME screw for?  Will it be used for the table?  That is sure a crazy bunch of ways to set it up!

It is for a belt sander that is long missing. I will either try to fabricate something that will work or I will just remove it for more leg space.

So, you've got cherry just laying around for things like this? Can I be your best friend?  :D

I used mainly low grade sapwood-ish, knotty, cupped cherry for this project, but I do have quite a bit of cherry laying around if you are needing some. Come on down to Arkansas and I'll load your truck up for you.

I saw a video of someone using one of these "pump drum" Sanders for making spoons. It flexes around what you are sanding to round the corners better. It made me think of your boy. I actually ordered $40 worth of the wrong size sandpaper. If you or your boy want to get one in the near future, get one that accepts the 3X9 sleeves that are 9.5" in circumference and I'll send you some paper. Mine takes 10-5/8" circumference paper but they are both called 3X9... Go figure. I believe you can mount the pump drums in a lathe as well if you don't have a sander they fit on.

That is going to be a nice set up! We will keep that in mind about the sleeves. That is going to be quite a top for it. I can't wait to see it running.

Thanks for sharing that video. I showed Ashton that video and he this is we need one. I think we could find a use for one too. We shall put it on the wish list.  8)

hackberry jake

No oscillation. I haven't decided on how to suck the dust yet. Probably just let it fly and wear a mask. I have a dust collection drop nearby I'll experiment with. I think the sander is officially complete now.
