I was building some wood crate boxes today for the leftover slabs for firewood.
One of the cants was really heavy and hard to cut.
Then I noticed it was also hard to Pound nails into.
I took a closer look and was surprised to see 79 rings in this 5" square block of wood.
I know the north hill side of my land is very poor for growing thing and in my life time has never be timbered off.
I sure wish that I would have counted all the rings in this tree before I cut it up.
It was a 20" log. Maybe this tree was over 300 years old...

I'd guess closer to 120 at most yrs old. Looks to be about 50 yrs to get to about 4" diam, then the tree was released and the growth quite a bit faster.

I have a tree, some sort of spruce,it's about 6 inches across. Been that size ever since I can remember.
I remember knocking down a tree about the size of a light pole. That tree was about 70-80 years old. All the other trees that old in that same area was 3 feet across.

Kbeitz, I like your firewood box.

An old bugger for sure.
Looks like typical Hemlock with some shake showing.
I just got a delivery of 14- 15K hemlock logs yesterday.
so far very little shake showing.
20" tree, half dia 10", 79 rings in 5"
with the increase in growth I agree with beenthere that it was probably 120 yrs maybe alittle older.
