Karen had never attended an auction so we went last night. I think I may have created a monster, she is hooked. :D Bidding was slow, the small crowd sat on their hands. I didn't intend to buy anything as funds are a little tight but couldn't resist a Beaver 8" table saw on a stand with extra blades and a Webster 2 hp stationary compressor with a 30 gallon tank, $7.50 each. You read that right, I couldn't believe it either. The saw works, I have to wire in a 240 outlet in the garage to run the compressor so will convert the saw motor at that time. Karen got three brand new porcelain kitchen canisters for 5 bucks. Spent more on dinner than at the sale. ;D
A nice dining room set went for $45, a beautiful china cabinet for $75. It had to be worth two grand new. The auctioneers sure didn't make big bucks.

My dad was an auctioneer and I wrote many a sale.  He always talked about how two guys got into a bidding war and spent more on a bucket with holes in it than they could have bought a new one for.  You need to know what you're bidding on and who you're bidding against.

Another story he told was that there was a sale for a farm which an Amish man bought for $25,000.  This was back in the '60s.  He told the auctioneers that he would be right back.  He came back with a milk can full of money.  They counted it out and there was $30,000.  The Amish man said he grabbed the wrong milk can.

When the Amish go to the ER......they bring cash.
They had a big dust up here a while back over workers comp., they wouldn't carry it because they don't use it.

I have seen someone pay 9 dollars for a 7 dollar shovel, happens fairly regularly. A friend of mine recently helped set up an auction at her bachelor uncle's farm. The family attended the auction and bought what they each wanted. She bought a nice antique dining table and chairs in excellent shape for 200 dollars but the old falling apart table that she thought would only make firewood that sat in the drive shed with oil cans on it brought 400. Go figure.

ou never know how an auction will go. i have came away with bargains. but at some auctions you wonder what people see in some things to pay so much. i have watched rusty chain bring more than new chain would cost. people insist that the old chain is stronger than the new chain made now. amish attends some of the sales around here. if one of them starts to bid against you  you might as well drop out if they see something they want they will pay whatever it takes to get it.
i have been to a couple of auctions where i thought the auctioneer had someone deliberately running up an item on me. once i had ran an air compressor to nearly one thousand dollars. i dropped out they could not get anyone to go higher after several minutes one of the auctioneers helpers came to me and said if i would raise it another twenty five dollars he would see that i got it. that told me he had someone deliberately running up the price without intending to buy it.

I once saw the bidding on some older tandem trucks start at a grand, the tires were worth more than that. They left at fire sale prices yet inside the building on small tools it got stupid. 3 ton bottle jacks sold for 30 dollars each and every one leaked, downtown at Princess Auto they were $29.95  ::)
The better auction houses like Ritchie Bros or Michener-Allen don't use shills to drive up the bidding, they also will not allow the seller or his agents to bid on his own equipment. Violators get escorted out and banned from participating in future sales. They have a reputation to protect

Having a shill bid an item up is quite illegal.  The auctioneer is not supposed to even buy things for their own.  I also know that there are people who bid that many people don't notice.  Writing a sale allowed me to sit next to the auctioneer and watch who was bidding.  Rare was the time when a mistaken bid was taken.  Usually it was someone scratching an itch or talking with their hands.

I like to go but am not good and they do confuse me. Hard to tell when selling livestock if by the head or pound sometimes.  I like to go to flea markets and can get real good deals but, as mentioned, you do need to know new prices. I see minnow baskets and fish traps selling regularly for $10 each when new they bring 6-7 dollars.

I went to an auction a couple months ago.  Spent just under $200 and I am kicking myself, I should have bought way more!  Prices were next to nothing.

I felt bad cause I knew the elderly gentleman and it was his whole life auctioned off.  He is in bad health, kids not interested, and liquidated everything.  He even sold the house he was living in, with a life agreement that he could live there till he died free of rent.  The neighbor bought the house and property, probably paid more than it was worth, just so the gentleman and his wife could stay in their house for the remainder of their years.

Deals sometimes depend on circumstances beyond our control and sometimes you roll the dice and take your chances.

Amish were in well attendance at this auction. In fact, they bought the farm where the auction was held, July 2015.

My wife's relative sold a their house to Amish at auction a few years ago.  paid cash, over $300k.  Then proceeded to gut the house and fill in the in-ground pool.  They kept the paved driveway, and added on to the barn.  Place does look nice but I know the Amish in the area are known to maximize their benefit at the expense of 'English' in the area.

this one made me laugh out loud! :D :D :D but a deal is a deal, like when they shop and save money by hitting a sale?  funny stuff!
only have a few chain saws I'm not suppose to use, but will at times, one dog Dolly, pretty good dog, just not sure what for yet,  working on getting the gardening back in order, and kinda thinking on maybe a small bbq bizz,  thinking about it,

sawguy21

I wired in the 240VAC outlet today, compressor works great. 8) It and the saw were the best value I ever got for 15 bucks.

A good Amish turn out at this auction, 8/15.

Went to one today, didn't stick around for what I really wanted but for $75 got a lot of boxes of goodies, a 3/4" socket set almost complete, one toolbox full of files (at least 25# worth) every shape and size, one toolbox of bushings all different sizes, and a Mcullough  1010 chainsaw, started on the third pull didn't even have to put gas or oil in it, just thought it was too cheap at $3  ;D.   I also got a tool box full of piston wrist pins and a tool box full of bearings that I really didn't want but they threw them in, the other boxes that came with them made up for it.  I found a few "whatzits" in there I may need some help with once I get some pics.  This was from a lifelong mechanic that I knew, he built miniature sized tractors for parades and such, powered by B&S engines and such, he tinkered in everything and was as creative as anyone I've met.  I really wanted his old Lincoln welder for my shop but there'll be another sale.

sawguy21

If you weren't so far away I would give you 6 bucks for the saw. ;D

Sorry, it's not for sale  ;)
Ron, there was a lot I didn't see before I bought it, but when I got it all home I had a real fun time digging through it all!  He made and collected things all his life, I like those kind of sales  :).  The only thing I kick myself for was a book he wrote on how he built his miniature tractors, I meant to buy one (there was a milk carton full) and totally spaced it off  ::).
