hey folks,
i got a question bout the above saws. i have a 350 that blew up, and had a rough life before i got it. was a crew saw. and this fall ima rebuild it. i want to know what you think is the best way for me to go based on my needs which is

a saw with the most low end for pulling a lil longer bar than a lot of folks run. this will see a 20" - 24" bar, likely .325, def chisel, full comp, for cuttin brush and also some firewood and clearing roads of blowdowns as a truck saw.

i used to run both a husky 42 and husky 51 cutting brush n slashing professionally with 24" bars, full comp 3/8ths chain.  they were both in this 3hp power range, albeit the 51 had wayy more torque in wood over 12" and the 42 had jackrabbit speed in brush and was dismally slow in wood over 12" lol.  they both put in a few seasons full time and were running great when a thrown chain cut a big hole in the 42, and the 51 broke a case half when a hunk of log rolled on it.

after some research i see the above oem p&c sets as my best options and know that i will hafta do some small changes to fit the 346, not sure on the 353. porting will be done at a later date.

what do ya think?

Try to clean up the cylinder and get a Meteor 353 piston for it. Base gasket delete, muffler mod. Retune and run it.  ;) A 346 cylinder will fit, just takes a little work around a few points I believe. 353 and 350 share same cylinder if the 52cc 350. If it's trashed maybe can find a used one decent priced, Chainsawr perhaps. If it's the older 49cc model then this won't work I don't believe though. IIRC 52cc has primer, 49cc doesn't.

JohnG28, thanks for the info. And i forgot to mention that was one option i have in mind if it is possible. Ill know when I tear into it this weekend when he brings it over. Its been a while so i dont rightly know which one it is 49 or 52cc.

One thing im curious about, i hear lots of rave reviews on the 346 but much less about the 353. I just learned today on bailys site, the 353 is a closed port cylinder, yet it acres site say it spins the same as the 350 and not the much faster 346. does anyone have any comments on how the two stack up against each other?

A 353 is a bolt on. Not hard to "fit" a 346. If you aren't pinching pennies go 346.

thanx Weimedog! I was hopin you'd  chime in, I been watchin thru your videos on the 350. They been very informative and helpful.  I'll watch this one.

And nope Im not pinchin pennies with this project, wanna get it done the best way. The cost of an oem 346xp p&c really isnt that bad when you think of what ur gettin.

ok, just got the saw back and tore it down. its the 45mm version which is cool I guess but it is definitely gonzo. good thing i already planned on the the 346 p&c. :)

got a question, how do i tell when it was made? I assume theres a code in the serial #  ?

JohnG28

Post your serial number and it can be decoded quickly down to week and unit.  ;) I don't know it off top of my head but ST or Walt or someone can help you fast. As I recall the first 2 numbers are year, i.e. 02xxxxx would be built in 2002 if a model from that series.

JohnG28

Yes, as I know their s/n's that should be a 2004 unit. I don't recall how to decipher the rest though, sorry.

Depending  what #'s are under the 2 x's if there are any. It would be a 1200 something unit built in the 48 week of 2004.

Ok great, the year is all i was curious about. thanx gents

FWIW, this may not apply to the saw you mentioned because he may not sell a AM kit for it but, I just bought and installed a kit on my 385 XP from Chainsawr that was awesome.   The jug had no casting imperfections, the ports were perfect and, the only thing I did was polish the exhaust port, widen the transfer ports and polish them, Moddied the muffler, and switched the rings out for Caber rings.  His would have worked fine.  I also put the gasket on it.  The saw runs very, very well.  Extremely quick with a lot of compression.  It yanks a full comp chain on a 24 inch bar through anything effortlessly.

I'm a huge Meteor and OEM guy when it applies but, the rebuild kit I received from Chainsawr was flawless and after 5 gallons of fuel, is just getting better.  God Bless

Depends on how old the saw is, but correct for a 2002 saw... ;)

Did you mean yywwxxxx? I know the earlier year saws were different, but this holds true for the last 20+/- years, correct?
