The grapple on my 518 turns freely, but can't control the rotation. Motor turns normally. It looks like the grapple has dropped about a half inch below the pivot block, so the pin is not catching in the groove. Book calls for an adjusting nut below the bearing, but no other details. Anybody worked on one of these before?

kiko

It is just a spindle set with nut and lock tang.  I have found that most times the threads are damaged on the spindle and the nut.  Simply tightening it may not end the issue.

Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of. Haven't had time to dig into it yet, but it can't be good when the spindle has opened up, and the lock ring appears to be in place.  :(

Thank you for your reply, and also for the PM sent by coxy.

Well, sometimes you get the bear... :)

Got lucky, found that the lug on lock ring had broken and the spindle nut backed off. Top bearing came apart, but was able to repair it. Ready for work if it ever dries up. I appreciate kiko and coxy's replies. I don't mind working on something here and there as long as I have a basic understanding of what I'm facing.
