Help identifying flying insect

I was at the barn today stacking some lumber and notices some small black flying insects swarming around the side of the tack room.  They were flying like gnats and landing and going into tiny bored holes in the pine siding.  I am not sure what kind of insect they are and have attached pictures.  Can't remember ever seeing them around the barn in the past, but maybe it is a seasonal thing.  They fly too fast to be an ant.  Fly more the speed of mosquito.  The pictures aren't great since it is hard to take a photo of a small fast moving insect with an iphone in poor light!

Looks like a carpenter ant to me.
