what to charge for sawmilling green pecan

What's the going rate to charge bd/ft for sawmilling pecan?  Im located in the carolinas btw.

Hello Eli Henry, and Welcome to the Forestry Forum.  I charge the same for sawing any species and any dimension.  Simple across the board bf sawing rate.  Some sawyers use an elaborate sawing/billing schedule.

Rates seem to vary in different sawing markets across the country.  I see them most often listed from $250 to $350 per Mbf.  And then there is the hourly rate option that is favored by some sawyers.  I often see these rates listed between $50 and $85 per hour.

Whatever the billing rate is, both the sawyer and the customer must receive/give value for the rate and product.

I can welcome you to the forum but all I know about pecan is folks around here says it's the  , don't know first hand about that but if I were you I'd listen to Magicman and not me

It saws just like hickory because it is a hickory.  Tough.

I use a flat BF rate for all species with an hourly rate for custom jobs like splitting for rail fences or slabbing mantles or poles and also for small log that won't provide decent bf (like a bunch under 10" diameter - a few small ones in the mix is expected with bf rate) and bf calculations are hard to compute.

If its under 1" I count as 1".

Like MM says that you and the customer should understand and agree before cutting is the most important aspect.

I advise customers to only saw trunks.   No limbs no matter what the size.


 


 
But if they insist, I will saw anything and charge for sawing it.

What are some of the reasons limbs are going to cause problems?

Main ones are the unbalanced growth stresses from growing more horizontal than straight up.
When sawing, these stresses are released in the form of warp, twist, and cracking.

I have a lot of crafts builders in my market. I will take limb wood and saw it into 2-4 feet lumber.
Bundle it up and get 25.00 a bundle.
Shorter limb wood won't act up as bad as longer limb wood.
