I have a huge triple trunk (a 4' diameter trunk about 4' tall then branching into 3 trunks) black cherry in my pasture that has started losing big slabs of bark on the lower trunk (only one of the three). All of the limbs on this trunk are covered with new leaves just like the other trunks. Am I going to lose it?

Do you have livestock rubbing against it?

Ron, No livestock rubbing on it. I looked closer today and there are lots of bug tunnels under the loose bark. If it's a goner, I want to cut and mill it before the carpenter ants hollow it out. BUT I would rather have it live as it is a beautiful tree in my front pasture.

Carpenter ants follow (come along after) the rot in the wood... they don't eat good solid wood.  just sayin....

I totally agree but they get there quickly in our country (especially with cherry).
