I just had to replace the muffler on my 2186 and I looked in through the exhaust port and the piston was scored up pretty bad the cyl is reusable but I was wondering what it would take to put a 2188 p@c on it. Would I need the carb and boot off a 2188 or will mine work? I tryed out a new 2188 a while back and was amazed at the power it had! But of course my 2186 had good power 4 years ago lol.

As far as I know it's a simple R and R. Displacement increase came from bore only.

Simple swap of piston and cyl.  Everything from your 2186 fits 2188.  Check that intake boot for cracks underneath and the clutch side crank bearing.  There is a reason the piston is scored.

Ok thanks! I will check the crank bearings I may replace them while I'm at it. I already checked the boot no cracks

Be aware that the 390/2188 cylinder isn't as well ported as the 385/2186 one. I would do it only if I was going to have the saw ported anyway.

I'm sure it was done on purpose, likely for some EPA related reason...

Thanks for the information Niko, I was looking into buying a 390XP someday.

Yes thank you for the info! I will just put a new piston in my cyl then.

The 385/2186 is very well ported for a stock saw - but the saw is seriously restricted at both ends (carb and muffler).

I was planning on doing a dual port muffler. What can be done about the carb?

Change to a larger one (the RWJ4 of the 372xpXT is an option), or upen up the venturi. Opening the venturi without know exactly what you do is not advisable.

For a every day wood cutter the 2188/390 run just fine from the factory.
Muffler Mod will help some for a small gain, but your ears pay with more noise.
Only time I have heard of the carb holding one back is in a cookie cutter.

Will the RWJ4 bolt right on? I suppose I could try one off one of my 2166s before ordering one

I think the simple answer is yes. Cause I used a 385 boot and throttle cable bracket to mount a 372xp P/C to a XT carb.

NCFarmboy

Definately RWJ4 works.  The late model 2188 comes with a WJ carb.  Cant't remember for sure IIRC WJ118?

Ok thanks for the help guys! So would putting a xt carb on an old 372 be a performance gain or only on modded stuff?

I believe so too, but can't confirm it 100%.

I am curious what the difference between a RWJ4 and a RWJ4B is?
