Its pretty hard to beat an 026, or a 242xp husky IMO, I have no idea if the new models are as good, and don't know about jred's.
Not sure which came first, but I have chickens and eggs.

I alway say, which dealer do you like better?

good used small saws are not to common around here or any size for that matter. I had a dolmar one time that was a good saw to but i dont know how they are now.  we ran homelite when i was a kid but they got to where they were no good couldnt even get one season out of them at that time we were cutting over 100 face cord wood per year so the first year dad had to buy 2nd new saw was the last homelite.  :D

thecfarm  thats why husky is not on the list. I make no difference between husky and stihl other than husky seems to have a little less vibration. The last husky I bought was a 353 for a pulp wood saw. I took it back to dealer to get carb set after 3rd tank gas like he said to( said that he had to do it for warranty) when I got it back he had ruined my chain with his grinder (literally turned it blue) said it needed sharpened when I got back to the woods, it would run ok but if you cut it of hot or run out of gas it would be 30 min before it would start  again dealer said that i was just getting it to hot so that was normal cool down.  So I have run stihl ever since.
I guess since that was the 1st saw i bought from him he thought  it was my first saw. >:(

I got a husky 445 and that thing is an animal. My buddy has stihl pro and my saw can pretty much keep up with his only thing is im still cutting and he is refueling :D.  Either way you wouldn't go wrong buying either one the both good saws.

It is the obvious choise - unless the buyer has very special "needs". Stepping down in size means a much larger loss in performance, than what is gained in weight.

I have a Stihl 261 and it has been great.

I would buy a 034 Super, the last 5 yrs i logged i used it for falling, limbing and bucking up. I fell timber for two skidders with it, trees 8" to 36 inchs, i had no problem staying ahead. The first one i bought i used 3 yrs straight, never broke the rewind spring or the rope, never changed the spark plug. It cut 12,000 plus cds of pulp and pine logs, my firewood, plus the firewood i sold. The saw impressed me everyday i ran it, i mean how fast it cut. I did this for a living and its pretty hard to impress me, but i'll tell you the 034 did. I had a 044 Mag and a 038 Mag, the 034 was my go to saw. I ran 10 to 12 tanks of gas a day, 32:1 mix, 16 inch bar, full comp chain.

lumberjack48 - I'm impressed that you cut 36" trees with a 16" bar !!

I have a Stihl 261 and it has been great.

Way too bulky, heavy and clumcy to be competetive. It feels and handles as a larger saw than it is.

FWIW an 034 super is in essence an 036 as far as displacement .Tad over 60 cc.

pabst79

The 034 super was and still is my dad's go to saw, has a very good power to weight ratio. Also pulls a 24" bar if needed! Its too bad that the 261 is a pound heavier then the 026, I didn't realize that til I was checking out Stihl's website, I guess if my 026 fly's away I will just look for another used one.

My brother has a 034 its a nice saw but is about the same as the 038. Im looking for a small saw, just something to trim up around the house, cut rafters and joist  ;D  stuff like that. I already have a 038, 441 mag, and 064 if i need something bigger. thanks for everyones thoughts.

I have two J'red 2054's that are great small saws.

I had a Stihl 034 Super back in the mid '80s. One of the best if not the best heavy pulpwood saw at that time.

But today's  top dog 60cc saw is this saw in the 1st photo.

Best most capable 40cc class saw on the market today from my own experience is the Stihl MS241CM.

Here's a 4 year old video of this saw when it first came out .

I can hardly compare the 038 with the 034. The 038 power head weighs in at 15 lbs, and a poor handling saw for limbing. More of a felling and bucking saw, tough as nails. The 034 weighs in at 11.5 lbs, runs 13,500 rpm, a fast and fun to run saw. The 036 didn't seem to be half the saw the 034 was, it didn't have the rpm.
I watched the video, the 034 would out cut it. The 034 is only 1.6 lbs heavier then the MS 241.

I personally would buy two like new 034's, before i'd buy one 241, but thats just my two cents.

Sorry fellas  yes the 60cc saw is a 562XP Husqvarna,  second saw is a 50cc 550XP.

47sawdust I've  heard good things about the small Dolmars also

Lumberjack 48 I hear you about  the  034 . It came out 4 years  after the 038AV and the 024/034 was the newest  revolutionary design for Stihl that later developed  into the 064/084/044AV. Just like Husqvarna  did with the 162 about 10 years earlier.
But the new Stihl MS241CM can't  be compared to the 034Super as the 241 is only 42cc versus the 61 cc  034. Almost 2 lbs difference  is big for small class pro saws.
The 241 is quite  a bit more compact and is primary designed  for limbing and pulpwood cutting . But it does have power of a much larger saw as the video shows.
