So I have an ms290 I picked up that was dropped out of a tree. I've been getting parts off ebay. My question is I ended up buying a 029av handle/cylinder cover, will the ms290 airfilter cover fit it? It looks like that the 029 and the ms290 had different kill switches?

I'm not sure the 029 or MS290 ever had a AV designation. All 029 and MS 290 saws have a anti-vibration system, as do most Stihl saws, but I don't think Stihl ever put that on as part of the 029, MS 290 designation. That being said the part number for the switch shaft is the same for 029 and MS 290. My books show the same part number for the carburetor box cover for 029 and MS 290. There may be other help here, as I have seen other Twist Lock handles on the cover.

I think the ms series saws have a rounded top and the 029 is flat, everything else will proably work. Good luck.

So would I essentially be able to buy a ms290 airfilter cover, and put it on the 029? This saw is originally a ms290. The only 029av part is the rear handle/plastic piece

Look up a place called Pike Hardware just south of you on rte 19 in Pike NY. They have been repairing saws for years and have many used part saws, they may be able to help put your saw back together. You may need to take it to them to see what you are doing, but I would call first to make sure the saw guy will be their.

The only thing different on that handle is the decal. Stihl part number 1127 790 1001 is the same for both 029 and MS 290. Your saw started its life as an MS 290 with flip up caps as opposed to a 029 with threaded caps. To answer your question, Yes, buy a 029 carburetor box cover, 1127 140 1900 and go to town.

thanks, thats the last piece i need to get to finish this saw.

if anyone was wondering, the rubber for the carb adjustment screws had to be shaved a bit to get it to fit inside.  and you can see on the left side, where the hose goes through with the rubber gromet, i had to drill that hole in the plastic. other then that, it bolted right on!

Two different styles of air filter cover for them.  The screwdriver twist lock cover is flat on top and the lever/ear type is humped.  I don't remember specifically which is what on 029 vrs. MS290 as all the parts are easily swapped in the entire family.
