I was timber cruising with a friend on some 400 acres he has been managing for the past few years and alot of the EWP had this battery-corrosion-colored tarnishy looking stuff on it and was wondering what exactly it is.  The spruce are being attacked by woodpeckers.

Here are some pictures:

Can't help you with the EWP, but if the woodpeckers are going after the spruce, it's already infested with something. They are after the insects, and can hear them (or otherwise sense them) in the tree. If I tree doesn't already have insects infesting it, the woodpeckers typically don't have a lot of interest.
