Hi there all,
At the moment im doing up/rebuilding a 372XP with all my spare parts ive got lying around. But the trouble/question is ive got, is whats the best carb for a 372XP? Is it the Walbro or the Zama??

Thanks.

The Walbro HD 12 is the only carb I'd use on a 372.

Walbro hd12 all the way. Much less restricted as far as emissions IMO.

The HD14 or even the HD 16 from a Stihl MS460 can be used, with some modifications. They give much better acceleration.

I had a 365/372 with a zama once that would never run right I had an old walbro laying around put that on and tuned it. It ran real good after that

Joe that's cool I didn't know that! I was wondering if one could put one of the larger xtorq carbs on but the boots look different

Ive had mixed results with aftermarket walbro replacements.
Ive installed two and the first had plastic stops on the low and high idle screws.
i wasn't impressed with the results after tuning, slight chain spin at lowest idle setting
I was at first pleased with the second zama, tuned very easy.
after 2 weeks of sitting it was a total different experience, ran like there was a vacuum leak.
still unable to tune the carb for consistant idle and good throttle response.
both saws got new fuel lines and filters.
these were both homeowner huskys, if i was in your shoes knowing my results, go stock walbro all the way.

The RWJ-4 of the 372XT certainly is better, with a 19.03mm vs. a 17.46mm venturi - but as I remember it, you need the intake from the 385/390. It no doubt is a major improvement on the 385/390 as well.

Boring it out to about 20mm certainly also helps, but don't do that without knowing exactly what to do, and what not to do. You can't simply "bore" out venturies on carbs, you need to know where they can be enlarged, and where not.

I used the non xtorq intake boot but had to use the 390 throttle cable backet & the xtorq choke horn & air filter mount

Does the step from the carb diameter to the smaller standard intake boot matter? Wonder if the newer carb just works better and the diameter isn't as much an advantage as the intake pipe is not changed.

Mmmm never thought of that when I bolted it together, I might take a look now

Yep there's around 1.5mm difference.. I guess that's why they run the 390 intake boot, I best be ordering 1

So often when carbs get brought up, everyone seems to have this 'bigger is better' mentality and l believe its rarely the case. Increased venturi diameters reduces intake velocity which fundamentally hampers the design engineers intentions often reducing performance. I would always take a smaller carb over a bigger one in most cases. There are exceptions of coarse, but far outside the  parameters of what's being discussed here with a close to stock 372.
