I have quite a few of these on the property, some a lil bigger, none overe 12" dbh, the bark gets slick more towards the top.
I have always thought of them as soft maple.

only have a few chain saws I'm not suppose to use, but will at times, one dog Dolly, pretty good dog, just not sure what for yet,  working on getting the gardening back in order, and kinda thinking on maybe a small bbq bizz,  thinking about it,

mesquite buckeye

Some buds and some of the dried up leaves would be helpful. In a few months you can collect the fruits which are quite good for ID also.
Manage 80 acre tree farm in central Missouri and Mesquite timber and about a gozillion saguaros in Arizona.

I have always thought that if you can pull some of the bark off with your fingers then it is NOT hard or sugar maple. But that don't tell you what it is  ;D
