Went to see about removing a giant Willow oak.  I will post pics when I get home.  Going to need some help and advice on this one.  The owner had a tree service remove all the limbs.  The first main limb broke off and almost killed the owner and his young grandson.
Thanks to Steve (flatrock58) for the referral.

What is left standing is about 24' tall and 10' from the house.  It has a slight lean parallel to the house.  Owners only request is that I drop it perpendicular away from house.

What are your thoughts about willow oak?   from what I can tell it grew very fast.  The growth rings from main limb have 1/4 growth rings.

Is it a true pin oak?  In the South, people commonly call water oak, willow oak, and laurel oak "pin oak".  Especially those folks in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas.

True pin oak, Quercus palustris, only grows this far South as an ornamental.

That is a big one for sure.  Are you going to slab it?

I'm thinking of taking a couple slabs and quarter sawing the rest.

Jake (Customsawyer)

Would you like to help me with this one?

It would be a good excuse to come see the mill.

I wouldn't mind coming up and helping. I need to pick your brain on your mill anyway. ;D Should I throw my WDH in the truck? :D Where is it located, close to you?

The giant willow oak I slabbed with my 090 in 2010 produced some nice slabs for me. Five pieces at ten feet long and over fifty inches wide, each. VERY heavy, so watch your toes. ;)

If I could convince you to put your restoration project back to work for a test drive out to west Ga we may have a vehicle that will haul this tree in one piece.

Daniel, Make sure to give me a call when you plan on cutting it.  I want to come down and see that!
