Curvy brace stock.  Going to cut a few spares in the morning then move on to crotched braces.

The last of the curved tie beams. A lot of black cherry. A great use for it as it doesn't like to grow straight most of the time.

I got a couple loads of logs in yesterday to custom saw.  Light green was to be 5/4, purple 8/4, dark green timbers, and red logs all 5/4 live edge slabs.  Color coding for us slow old guys is really a cool idea.

Sawing the whole log live edge was a first for me. Start at the top and saw to the pith, flip and saw to the deck.  No thinking involved.  If I had kept track it would have been a production record for me.  At first I had trouble flipping the half log but I figured out how to flip on to the log stops to make em turn.  Most of the logs were on the small side, including one big sarvis with spectacular color.  I should have took a picture....think $10 or more a board foot.

Think I'll become a live edge sawing specialist. :) :)

Dave if you just cut them down the middle then you'd have some nice 3 sided cants to sell me to feed the hungry resaw lol

Larry I like that color coding idea.  I always write on the end of the log with a lumber crayon what the customer wants and sometimes it can get hard to read over time.  Was that color coding done with anchorseal to make it a double play?

After sawing out some 1x10's after work, I got all cocky and thought I'd try practicing the reverse roll Quartersawing method on a pine log. Humbling experience. I took pics along the way and will post them tomorrow under Yellow Hammer's thread. The log really just wasnt big enough, around 21"-23" diameter. But I had studied that topic all afternoon and I've got some 24" red oak that I wanted to saw that way. Just too small. I got about halfway done and got miscombobulated so I ended up with a few pretty quartersawn 17" wide boards and the other half is still cradled in the loading arms. But I did learn a thing or two and that's what counts. I've got about 40 more syp logs that are mine to play with before I do any serious sawing with this thing for anyone else. But fun afternoon.

Yes sir. I'm about to do some damage with this thing around these parts, Lord willing.

And Magicman, that same squared cant was on the sawbed when I got home and I lowered the guide arms and YES! That's a time saver and knowing me, I never would have tried it thinking it wouldn't hold. Learning.

There is nothing wrong with leaving the side supports up for several cuts on a very tall cant to minimize/eliminate any vibration, just be sure to lower them when/after you flip the cant 180°.  That is also when you drop the clamp down to ¾".

Dave Shepard, 4" thick?
Lately I've been cutting 6" thick.  It depends on the size of the log.  The Osage I cut last year 6" because it was going down the center Isle of a horse barn and is more dramatic at 6".  I just cut about 12-15 pieces at 6" in case I need them at that.  I can always cut them down to 4" if it works better.  I probably will end up doing that on some.  Just depends on the diameter of the material you're starting with.  If it's big enough I'll cut two book matched 4"  like you did. I also leave 1/4 to 1/2 inch on them and plane later after they've dried a bit and stabilized a bit.  But you don't have to do that really, as one could just belt sand them and scribe them like that.

I don't know if you ever saw my threads where I talked about the different effects you can have on the live edge?  For Walnut and cherry, you can let the bark dry on the piece and 6 months to a year come back and draw knife the bark off, sand with 80 grit, put a coat of clear shellac, then sand with 180 or 150.
Check out the last 3 pics in this post. The last one is cherry.  The others are 2 different effects you can do on Walnut.

All 3" thick, plus a little planing allowance, per architect specs.

I wouldn't want a pine monoculture around here, but I do envy all you southern guys with straight SYP being given to you by the trailer-load. Nice lumber

Got to get started on these logs I got from my neighbor.  The tree company didn't have a way to load or haul them, so I ran up the road and got them. Took a while to get them all.  57 logs total.

Speaking of SYP, I am sawing some blue SYP.  The top boards in the pic are more variegated, but some of the boards are all blue.  This is part of an order for shiplap paneling.  I will kiln dry and plane.  Customer will do the shiplapping.

Been out of action, but had a visitor drop in today. Mr. Lynn(MM) and his dear wife, Miss Pat. Really made my day after coup up in a hospital bed for a couple days. Real nice people. ;D Just wish I had more time to spend with them, but I will plan a road trip to see them soon. ;D

Anyway, looking forward to get back sawing and building. That is what I do. ;D

I was able to do a show and tell with a mission team that is here at the camp my wife and I manage doing some of our spring clean-up.  They had never seen how a round log gets made into lumber.  We had cut a hazard tree down in the morning and shortly after lunch they gathered down at the mill to watch me whittle one of the logs down into boards.  Luckily I didn't hit the backstops or otherwise embarrass myself :).  I did however ruin an nearly new chainsaw chain cutting the tree down.  Found a big nail cutting the wedge out.  It was embedded about six inches from the outside of the tree.  Been there a while.

And here is proof that it happened my friend, except that Pat was taking the picture.  Yes, we had a too short but very pleasant visit with fishfighter (Paul) this afternoon.   :)

I did something today that was completely out of my character.  I drove 75 miles (150 round trip) to check out a potential job.  I understand why because the potential customer is working up his budget and needed a fairly accurate sawing estimate.  It was ~100 pecker pine logs that each will make two 16' logs.  The top ends of the butt
logs will be 10"-12" and the top ends of the top end will be 8"-10" all sawn 1".  He will furnish lodging.  I will have to put my "big boy" pants on to get those sawn in a week.  That plus have good help so that I will never have to leave the sawmill seat.

Yup, I took pictures, and this is 3 of the 4 whacks.  This will be a tough nut to crack.

Because there is not much meat on those bones.  My success will depend upon the help because most of these will be faster to turn by hand with the Logrite Mill Special.

Long, straight and skinny.  Looks like you'd be better off cutting 4x4's or 6x6's etc out of them, MM.

He has an LT10 and has already sawn this ~1800bf before giving up and calling in the "big guns".
