Looks very very nice, but this is just a tease right? Surely you are going to provide us with more details aren't you, and more pictures? Where did you get the plans? Have you built other boats before? If you can't tell, I'm fascinated. Must know more!!!!!

Never know what you'll find :D  not what I was expecting either! incredible work of art!  Got a dozen to saw for a lady this week,  and I'm sure we won't find anything near this,,
only have a few chain saws I'm not suppose to use, but will at times, one dog Dolly, pretty good dog, just not sure what for yet,  working on getting the gardening back in order, and kinda thinking on maybe a small bbq bizz,  thinking about it,

WOW. I bet that is pretty much a lost art that not a lot of people know how to do. I have always thought of myself as a fairly decent wood worker, but that put most of what i have done to shame. Well done

Got any more of those poles around?  ;)

That's amazing work. What kind of rigging will you use? Lateen? Gaff? Sloop? I assume that the mast will be able to be taken down after each use, so no standing rigging. What plans did you use? Are you going to fiberglass the insides or just apply resin? If you haven't noticed, I have a thing for sailing  ;D

More Pictures please!!!

Yeah, well, what he's not telling us is just how many poles he had to saw before he found that.

Absolutely amazing work Quebecnewf. 8)  Have you got any in-progress pics to post?

That boat came from that one pole, the water sweld up the the wood. Just kidding very nice work.

  Nice Clinker style,

Love wooden boats we have a big wooden boat show up in Georgetown every year. Some of the prettiest wood work I have seen is there. My girlfriend just can not understand why I love it so much.

Fantastic work. Pardon my ignorance, but what is a hydro pole?

:D  That is a miss-used term up in these parts for a utility pole.

A significant percentage of electricity (in Quebec particularly, but Ontario too) comes from large Hydro (water) dams.  The large utilities are named "Hydro + something else".  My utility is called Hydro One for example.  As a result electricity is often called "Hydro" and the poles "Hydro poles".   :)

Beenthere, he mentioned putting in a mast and centerboard at the bottom of the post. This design also looks similar to designs that can be used either way (rowboat, dinghy, or even small outboard motorboat). I have a book on wooden boat plans (can't remember the name) that had several small craft desings with this multi-use in mind.

Try to answer a few questions, and thanks for the comments

The boat is a Catspaw Dingy. Google it and you will see lots of info. Lots of nice boats as well. The " power" pole is a old Western Red Cedar pole that was took down after many years of service but because it is cedar was still good to saw( not as clear as I had hoped but I made do)

This is my first "clinker built" boat. I have built a strip built canoe many years ago but this is much more challenging.

The boat will be rigged with a sprit sale and will also be able to be used as a rowboat. My grandfather built all his boats this way. I never saw him he had died before I was born. This style of building was quite common in this area but was replaced by carvel style wooden boats and now of course the fiberglass has replaced all the wooden boats.
She is built bottom up over molds

And  steam bent frames over stringers

Then planked Bottom up

Then removed from the mold and turned right side up to continue the fitting out gunwalls, seats centreboard etc etc.

Will update as work progress after Christmas if any one is interested..

Merry Christmas

I see that the stringers are screwed to the forms.  Do you remove the screws as you work your way down with the planking?

Looks to me like the "stringers" stay with the mold, and the "ribs" stay with the boat when it is lifted off.

I think beenthere is right on about the ribs and stringers. The finished product is gonna be awesome.

Quebecnewf

Yes your right the stringers are removed as you plank and the frames (timbers) stay in the boat.
Did a little work on the seats today and roughed out and oiled the rudder. Epoxied the centreboard case needs another coat and then it will be ready to reinstall.

Not much else going to happen until after the Christmas holidays . We are leaving to visit with my wife's sister for the holiday season tomorrow.

When we return in the new year things should fall into place very quickly if conditions are no good for logging. I have many of the interior components made out and just need to paint and install

I will post new pics as I go .

Seat blanks and rudder roughed out.

We'll work is progressing after Christmas holidays. First coat of paint and primer on the inside. One coat of primer on the outside. Centreboard trunk installed temporary. Things should go quickly after this step is finished as I have made out many of the other components ahead of time, rudder, seats etc.

Well we have had some bad weather so I have had some more time in the shop

The " Rosalie" is about finished.

A lot of different woods from a lot of different places.

The keel is made from a type of hard pine ( I think) . This came from a utility pole that a friend of mine found on the bottom while diving to do an inspection on a transport Canada wharf in a village east of here. It was lost of a ship during unloading. I sawed the pole for him about 15 years ago and he gave me a piece when he heard I needed a keel

The stem and counter ( transom) are made of eastern larch that we cut 65 klm inland from here and transported back to the mill by snowmobile . I dried this in my solar kiln.

The timbers ( frames) are also made from eastern larch and then steamed and bent over the molds.

The plank is western red cedar from a large hydro pole that a friend gave me a section of.

The out walls are of pine from a plank that a friend gave me. This came of a coast guard light station that is now closed.

The in walls are white oak from a log that I bought from a contact many years ago . He sent this a a bonus with 22 large eastern white pine logs I bought at the same time. The logs came from down in the eastern US . Maybe around  Maine or Mass.

The seats are western red cedar as well.

The seat knees are eastern larch these are small strips steamed and bent around a mold allowed to dry and then glued up with epoxy

The mast step is BC Fir from some old cross arm pieces from another old utility pole that I salvaged.

The centreboard cap is teak from an old companion way set of steps that my grandfather salvaged from a cargo ship that wrecked 30 miles west of here many many years ago . Long before I was born.

The wooden cleats ( yet to be made and added) will be  made from iroko from a timber that a buddy and I salvaged of a wreck west of here. We know nothing of this wreck other than she was a large sailing vessel . Her plank was 4" thick. She was built all out of iroko and was sheathed in copper. She was fastened with copper and wooden tree nails.

Lots of different wood from lots of different sources.
